Hey everyone so I have been waiting for a couple of years to finally have all of the pre-reqs done to be able to apply to nursing school. I am finally finished and am just waiting for CSULB-elmsn's program which will start in Fall 2011. I want to know who else is planning on applying so we can have each other to go through the process with and I'm not going to lie I would really like to see what the competition is like. Goodluck to everyone. I look forward to meeting you in the fall!
Oh, and on a related note, does anyone know if we can work during the masters program? I know it will be too accelerated during the bachelors portion and that they discourage working during the first part, but will we be able to begin working during the second part? I know other MSN programs where they actually help get you job placement after the first half and basically require you to work while you finish up your masters degree. The reason why I am asking is because I am trying to figure out how I am going to pay for the program and it would be good to know if I will only need to take out loans for the first portion.
Hi chaberae - first of all congratulations on getting into the program and your upcoming birth.
From looking at the overall course program, the masters portion is just as intense as the first 16 months with 2-3 classes on a 4-6 week rotation. That being said, I think by that point we will be more used to the hectic pace. So it may be possible to work (at least part time) and complete the masters portion. At least I hope so because that is my plan. I only saved up enough money to not work for 18 months. I can't count on being able to get any or enough financial aid or student loan. Being the primary breadearner for my family, I'm nervous about quitting my job and becoming a full time student but I don't have any choice if I want to pass the program. Hopefully the job market will improve once we earn our RN license.
I have spoken with 2 people from the last class and here is what they told me... Only 2 people worked part time last year during the bachelors portion... They said that it is extremely fast paced and if you want to do well they told me not to work... They just started the masters back in march. One of the ladies I spoke to got a part time job as a RN while she is in the masters program but she told me that a lot of her classmates don't have jobs because of the way the economy is. I am hoping we will find out more about this exact question during orientation. I too also would like to get a job after the first 16 months!
K I am going crazy I tried to follow all of the directions... I got a background check... Set up my magnus account... uploaded my drivers license... (I am waiting on malpractice insurance since the earliest we can get it is June 15th in order to start on Aug 15th)... I can't for the life of my figure out what the healthy history form is... or where it is... apparently we are supposed to print it out and bring it to orientation! Please help?
Princesspea and Malefocker,
I had my baby last Friday and my husband will still be on paternity leave on the 10th, so I've decided to send him as my proxy. I am going to try to be there too, but with him there, I will be able to step out as needed. It will depend on how things are going with the baby 2 weeks from now. Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you for offering to help me out. I am looking forward to meeting you. I will be the one hanging out in the back with a newborn. Please come say hello if you see me there!

@prince27- at the info session that I went to last fall, ML said that yes, you can leave after getting the bachelors degree. In fact, she mentioned that a majority of the last graduating class (not the ones who are a year ahead of us) left the program after the bachelors point. I'm also under the impression that the program slows down a little bit after the bachelors portion.
