CSULB-ELMSN Fall 2011

Published

Hey everyone so I have been waiting for a couple of years to finally have all of the pre-reqs done to be able to apply to nursing school. I am finally finished and am just waiting for CSULB-elmsn's program which will start in Fall 2011. I want to know who else is planning on applying so we can have each other to go through the process with and I'm not going to lie I would really like to see what the competition is like. Goodluck to everyone. I look forward to meeting you in the fall!

I am going to be wearing a red colgate sweatshirt... so if any of you see me please come over and introduce yourself! My name is Joe. :)

Have fun at the info session! Unfortunately I will not be attending because I can't get out of work, but I definitely appreciate any info you bring back.

Alright here is what I learned at the information session in case you weren't able to be there

There will be a new undergraduate coordinator starting in the fall he seems really nice unfortunately I cannot give you his name on this forum but if you would like I have his contact information please pm me and I will be happy to give it to you.

They received funding for this year as everyone on this thread obviously already knows... but as of right now there will not be an ELM program next year because there is no funding but there will be one starting Fall 2013.

You are at a huge advantage if you can take Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Nutrition (before entering the program for a couple of reasons)

1. You won't have to pay for them at the graduate level which is what you will need to do if you take them at CSULB

2. You will have to take these classes the in the first semester along with other nursing classes. If you already have them

done you can focus solely on the nursing classes

Lecture is scheduled for 2 days a week usually monday/wed or tues/thurs each class is approximately 3 hours long (some classes due to size are scheduled 3 days a week)

Labs (clinicals) are scheduled 2 days a week as well. 7am to 7pm usually... however she did say that sometimes you may have a 7pm to 7am shift although they try and avoid them as much as possible. Clincals are usually held on Sat and some other day during the week they really try to avoid Sundays so you know you will have at least one day a week to enjoy your family

Regarding clinicals they do try and put you at hospitals that are close to where you live (which I thought was nice) The

furthest south they go is mission hospital and the furthest north they go in Torrance hospital

(So yes you do get 3 days a week off... which is nice!!!!)

They do not recommend that you work (in fact the coordinator used the exact words "that would be insane" :) however she also said that in the past they have had students that have worked through the whole program but most do not

The first part of the program is 18 months you will take 16 months of class/clinicals and at the end you will be awarded a BSN (which is pretty awesome) you will then get 2 months off (Jan and Feb) to study for the NCLEX then starting March 1rst the masters portion starts.

The masters portion is 18 months give or take depending on what speciality you decide. You need to fill out some paperwork but you are automatically admitted into the speciality that you want. You may decide not to pursue the masters and do it at a later date but if you decide to do that you will have to resubmit and application to the school just like everyone else does and the masters classes you will take will not be accelerated. You do not need to decided which speciality you would like to go into until the fall of the masters portion so basically 24 months after the program starts (I thought this was pretty awesome, so we can get a feel for nursing a little bit before we chose which speciality we are going into).

Couple other things...

Do not send transcripts with your nursing application they are going to use the transcripts you already sent... they will email you if they get an application and they need your transcripts.

They are unsure about whether or not they are going to do interviews. Like I mentioned before the interview is just a formality. It does not decide whether or not you get accepted they just want to know you can communicate using the English language :)

Their NCLEX pass rate for the last couple of years was 96% and 98%

They seem to think they are not going to get any less applications this time around (I personally think it will be less because they didn't get notice that they received funding until last min but that is what they said)

You can take the TEAS anytime prior to April 2nd... even though you scores won't be in on time for the application that is alright... if you are taking it at Long Beach they will get a copy of your scores if you are taking anywhere else make sure you let them know that you took the teas and that you will send them a copy of your results as soon as possible.

Side Note - I consider myself a pretty strong candidate for this program and I spoke to about 5 people that were there that had higher scores than me :( Praying and hoping I get in!!! Looks like a very intelligent group of people.

If you have any questions please feel free to pm me... I tried to tell everyone about this website so hopefully we will see some of them on there! Good luck everyone

Thank you for all of the useful info malefocker! I am new to this site but am also a CSULB fall 2011 applicant. It makes me nervous that there were 5 people you met that had higher scores. I have a 9.36 score and thought I was golden! I applied to lots of other programs and I know sooner about their decisions, it's hard to wait out for long beach. Decisions come out sooo late!

Malefocker you are amazing! Thank you for taking the time to type out all that info. Very helpful. :-)

No problem guys! I have a 9.31 you got me beat! :)

Yeah I met someone that said she had a 9.8 CRAZY!!! I did find it interesting that about half of the people that were there were males :) Also there weren't that many people there maybe 25-30

Thank you very much Malefocker! All of that info was VERY helpful!

I sat right next to you, Joe!!! How crazy is that?! There were quite a few people in that meeting who may not end up being applicants for this cycle. I left the room feeling a little excited about things to come.

Me too I am way excited!!!

Hello, I'm new to this site and I'm super glad I found this thread. I've been waiting anxiously to apply! @ Malefocker, I was not able to get the day off to attend the info. session, but thanks so much for posting an update. Also, I'm no sure if I am understanding correctly, but there is not going to be ELM program this coming Fall 2011? Thanks again!

There is a program this fall... there will not be one for next fall! Fall 2012... unless they receive funding

Thank you for clarifying this for me!
