Anyone else applied? I know they're supposed to notify us on April 1st but I'm curious if anyone who applied got any feedback yet. :)
I agree with you- it is too bad UCLA does not offer a NP specialty. Also, while ranking does not matter much to me, i would imagine that it does matter to many others. But, yes, CSULA is very reputable and a great school!!!
I too was rejected from UCSF. However, I was not expecting to get into this school, so it didnt get me down much..
I'm a little discouraged to hear that a MECN student dropped out because it was all paperwork and very little clinical. I'm also very surprised Kathy is making her decisions as she goes along and not waiting till the end after everyone is interviewed. Like I said earlier, I have met a lot of nurses at a very reputable hospital who graduated from CSULA and had great things to say about the program. Two of them were even hired as new grads which is tough nowadays.
Definitely a lot of decisions to make.
PS: How long is this program? 2 or 3 years? I'm confused with all the schools I applied to.
CSULA ELMN = 5 quarters prelicensure component (15months), and then 2-3 years of MSN with specialty (depends on which specialty tract you take). You get your RN after 15 months and then continue with your MSN.
UCLA MECN = 2 years for MSN with Clinical Nurse Leader eligibility. You get your RN after 2 years along with your MSN.
Hi all!
I'm new to this thread and to allnurses.com in general. I am in the middle of waiting to hear back from all these different nursing schools as well and sharing the same anxieties as some of you so I though I'd join in the conversation. I applied to a few masters (MECN, UCLA, APU), as well as some bachelors' program. I am accepted into Mount Saint Mary's AccBSN program starting this May, and will plan to take that route if these master's programs reject me. I figure its one year and I can work as an RN after I graduate for a bit and then just reapply to other maaster's program if I still feel a need to get that higher education. I'm not sure if I want to be a NP for sure...I'm interested in the Education or Admin route - anyone interested in that? or could tell me more about what you can do with it afterwards, cuz it sounds so non-specialized that I'm afraid it won't be worth the Masters. I've beeen told you can still rise in position if you are a experience RN with just a BSN...
I had my interview this Monday, the 28th with Kathy and honestly I have no idea how it went. She did ask pretty detailed questions, and I answered them as honestly and confidently as I could but not sure what she's looking for. I encourage you all who are still waiting to have your interview to not be too nervous. She's really nice and didn't make me feel nervous at all. Just be who you are. :) though...I'm not sure how this works... if she's going to be interviewing WHILE handing out acceptance letters...i mean, when she reaches the 20 spot mark, will she stop then?
For those of you who have already interviewed, did she say how she would contact us about her decision? (i.e. email, snail mail, phone call?).

This was really helpful, thank you for all the advice HeyJude222!!!!
Yes, how will that work if she's accepting students as she goes along on her interviews? It almost sounds like a first come first serve entry. I spoke with her on Monday and she said she's still going through applications and ranking them. I really don't understand that because how can you be consistent in ranking if you're pulling students to interview at a time and saying you'll be making a decision after interviewing someone? I asked how many she's planning to interview and she said that will depend on the ranking. Again, how can you determine someone's ranking if not all of the applications have been evaluated yet but people are already being called in for interview? She pulled my application while I was talking to her and she said I have a high probability of being interviewed yet it's almost Friday and I haven't gotten an email from her yet. *sigh*
Thanks for letting me vent.

HeyJude222,
Kathy specifically told me after the interview that it will be via email =). If I were you I would still go for MSN. With the same amount of money you would spend on AccBSN (which I believe cost around 50K for one year:uhoh3:), you can end up with MSN with specialty. Also, even if you wanna go the Ed or Admin route, there are certain positions that require you to be a MSN. Let's say for example, if you wanna be a floor manager I believe BSN should suffice, but if you wanna move up more in the future and possibly become a 'director of patient care', you WILL need your MSN.
P.S. I applied to UCLA, CSULA, and APU also! Got into APU but the program starts next year fall =(.

In all honesty, I'm not sure I want to be an NP either. To be perfectly frank, I applied with the idea of becoming the "highest level nurse", but now that I'm in the program, I could totally see myself being "just" an RN. I really like the ER so far and nurses pretty much run everything.
Still, I applied to the FNP option because I believe it will be the broadest. Our school offers the Ed and Admin options as well, and I'm definitely interested in education, but I figure I'll be able to teach with any MSN degree, so I may as well go for the one that gives me the most marketability/flexibility. I've also met some RNs who have NP degrees but chose not to work as one. The options are endless and that's what I completely adore about nursing - before I got in, I never realized how many different things I could do, but the teachers definitely do a good job of exposing you to all the different paths. :)

I dont see how she would just stop when she reaches 20 spots. That doesnt seem fair to those who dont have their interview for a couple weeks...my best guess would be that maybe she invited close to 20 people to interviews, and if you do good you are in, if you dont, more people are called to interviews...but who knows. It sure does make me nervous!

I guess it all depends on what you want to be after the school... it would have been better if ucla offered NP option with their program. =(. Either get it over with NP courses while you are at it.. or take a break and work as a RN for couple years.. and then apply for two more years of postmasters.
I personally think the ranking doesn really matter. If the school has the ability to prepare and connect you to a good hospital, then its a good school. CSULA is very reputable in so cal and I have met many nurses and managers who came out of CSULA.
Anyways I have my fingers crossed for both UCLA and CSULA. Man so many thoughts going on in my head lol. Especially after getting rejected from UCSF for two years straight, I am over with any more rejection letters haha
