Anyone else applied? I know they're supposed to notify us on April 1st but I'm curious if anyone who applied got any feedback yet. :)
Hi all,
I'm part of ELMN Cohort 7. I'd be happy to field any questions you guys have. I was in the same position last year, having applied to CSUN's ABSN and CSULA (I never bothered to apply to UCLA since I worked with a girl who dropped out of the MECN program saying that it was a lot of papers and no clinical time until the third quarter - though I'm not sure how that is now).
I really love the program here, though it's not without its faults. In terms of cost - we're no longer part of the regular school; we pay through extended education. For Cohort 6, the cost was about 2,000/quarter (regular grad student prices). For us, it's $425/unit and about 76 units = $32,000 for the prelicensure portion of the program. We then become legit grad students at the school and the price drops.
In terms of the Masters portion, I'll warn you now: just because you check the FNP option doesn't mean you're guaranteed that track. We found that out some time after orientation. The faculty basically want to see how your grades are for Summer and Fall quarter and they require you to fill out another application and write another essay about why you deserve that track.
Otherwise, the program is really great. The teachers are wonderful and really passionate, and the hospital experiences have been good, too.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Good luck!
I believe it is going to be around 40, but I did not ask so that is just a guess. I think it went really well. I was surprised by how much so knew about my application. she really did her research on me before my interview and was asking specific questions. As long as you know why you want to become a nurse and can demonstrate that you are a team player you should be fine. She told me I should find out if i was acctepted in about a week... needless to say this is going to be the longest week of my life
I'm also in ELMN cohort 7. I agree with what Innatchka says, that's been my strategy for getting through this first year of school and it has served me well.
If you didn't get an interview, don't fret too much. I didn't get an interview and ended up on the wait list. On the upside, Kathy does not keep a very long wait list because generally they only have at most 2-3 people turn down admission each year. So if you make it on the wait list, you still have a decent shot at admission. On the downside, since you did not get an interview to begin with so are just a name on a page. You have to communicate with Kathy and distinguish yourself if you really want a spot when/if one opens up. The two of us that were admitted from the wait list last year did that and that is why we are in the program now.
I'm also available to answer any questions you may have. I'm a guy so if anyone out there want to know what nursing school is like from a guy's perspective, drop me a line.
I just took my interview on monday and I thought everything went pretty well..Although me being confident about what I said has nothing to do with what Kathy thinks of me. It was one on one, so it was more like a conversational interview for me. I agree that she reviews our applications in detail since it seemed like she asked me series of questions based on my records on the application. I was surprised to find out that she used to be a peds nurse at CHLA for a long time, and she asked me a lot about my experience at CHLA, where I currently work.
Anyhow, is it just me that who thinks that CSULA's ELMN program sounds better than the MECN program that UCLA is offering?
Class size: CSULA-20; UCLA-60
Degree/Certification offered: CSULA-MSN with NP specialty. UCLA-MSN with CNL specialty.
Able to work while at school: CSULA-yes, UCLA-no (based on what I heard from UCLA students)
I dunno.. so many people wanting to get into UCLA.. but is it really worth it other than their name brand..In the end I think what matters is whether or not you'll be able to get a job and perform adequately within your responsibility.
Hey ADEcstatic, I got your message, but am unable to reply since I haven't posted 15 postings yet. No, I haven't heard from Kathy yet, which makes me even more nervous....
I just sent her an e-mail and she responded with "I am still in the midst of ranking applicants and setting up interviews which will occur during this month. Thank you for your patience!"
I'll keep you posted if I hear anything else from her.
