CSULA BSN FALL 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

It may be a bit early, but I wanted to create this forum for all of us students who want to be accepted into CSULA's SON for Fall 2019. We can discuss the TEAS, pre-reqs, deadlines, points, CSU transfer procedures, etc. Let's do this!

Hello everyone!

I am currently a senior in high school and recently got accepted to the pre nursing program at CSULA and had a few questions regarding the process to getting into the 3 year BSN program. Could I ask a few questions?

Hey!

Of course! This page is kinda old, but feel free to ask any questions! I'm a current 2nd year in the BSN program :).

Thank you for replying!! I was curious on how I accept my admission into the pre-nursing program. I already committed to CSULA but what about the nursing program? Are there two acceptances that I need to accept?

No prob !! A pre-nursing student accepted into CSULA isn't in CSULA's traditional BSN program yet. The "pre-nursing student" denotes that you are in the process of applying to the school's nursing program after you complete your prerequisites. After you complete your prerequisites, you will have to apply to the school's nursing program again, this time for the actual nursing program, if that makes sense.

So essentially, there isn't another acceptance you need to accept. (I don't believe this process has changed...but I may be wrong. I'll check online!) And sorry I didn't mention this earlier, but congrats on getting accepted into CSULA! ?

Thank you! I’ll wait until orientation to see what are my next steps. Speaking of orientation, is that where you choose your classes for next fall? Because I heard the pre nursing students have to fight for their classes along with the rest of the CSULA students and some pre nursing students don’t even get all the classes they need, what happens if the pre nursing students don’t get all their class credits before applying to the 3yr Nursing program?

No problem! So I'm not too sure how the classes work out since the pre-nursing student can complete them in 1 year now. 2 years ago when I applied we had to take pre-requisites for the first 2 years.  From what I can remember, the Golden State Eagle Orientation was not the day I chose classes for the upcoming fall. I took a look at the updated information PACSON updated Summer 2020 and it states that the prerequisites must be completed by December 31, prior to the application deadline, so yes you must complete the courses the first semester of college if you want to try applying to the traditional BSN program for the upcoming year. From my experience, getting classes especially BIOL 2010 and CHEM 1010 were absolute hell. My other friend and I did not get those needed prerequisites the first semester of college. Even the next semester, we had to scramble on waitlists and ask teachers to accept us into their class. It's really terrible...Unfortunately, if you do not get the needed classes during your first year, you cannot try applying for the traditional nursing program during your first year. You must wait until next year. The only exception to prerequisites is Microbiology which can be taken during the Spring semester.

Hii, in response to the comment above I also wanted to mention that you can concurrently take classes at a community college while enrolled at CSULA. This might be helpful if you're having a difficult time getting the classes you need. Just bear in mind that there is a limit to transferable units!

Okay thank you for the advice! Do you know how many units we have to complete for our prerequisites in order to apply to the Nursing program? And how would I know what classes to take before applying? Would they tell me maybe at orientation ahead of time so I could get a head start to complete my units this Summer at community colleges?

Hey! This is the link to the updated 2020 guidelines to the traditional BSN program!

https://www.calstatela.edu/sites/default/files/groups/Patricia%20A.%20Chin%20School%20of%20Nursing/PDF/must_read_information_for_applicants_bsn_trad.pdf

I'd recommend going through all of it as there is a lot of important information on the pdf; but, the required pre-requisites are on page 3 of the pdf and you can use www.assist.org to see what classes you can transfer from community college for those needed pre-requisites. Currently, there are 4 required pre-requisites for the first semester which are:

BIOL 2010 w/ Lab

CHEM 1010 w/ Lab

ENGL 1010

And an upper/lower division course of statistics

(All of these are mentioned in the pdf I linked above :))

Thank you so much for the advice ? to those who were CSULA pre-nursing majors, do you know if you are eligible to apply to any other nursing programs like CSULB or others, I just want to know what my options are. Where else can you apply just in case you don’t get into CSULA?

Does anyone know where I can get volunteer experience? To those who were pre nursing students at CSULA, did you start to volunteer when you were a senior in high school? And for anyone, before volunteering, did you need to Interview at all or was it simple to sign up and just volunteer at a local hospital. I’m just curious so I can start volunteering and getting in my hours ?
