Thought I'd start at Fall 2020 thread for CSUEB to see if anyone else here is preparing to apply for Fall 2020 in Hayward.
I'm finishing up my pre-reqs this Fall and just signed up for the TEAS. Getting pretty excited as I feel like some of my hard work is starting to pay off and just wondered if anyone else is too. Here are some of my stats: science GPA 4.0, cumulative 3.97, local admin points and health hours are good.
I've never written a personal statement before which is now required, anyone have any tips? I want as many of those 20 points possible as I can manage!

However, I'm not really concerned about their level of preparedness for us as students because they've always held a really good reputation. I have heard that the first semester Concord students were struggling so badly with the transition, & others have told me that they wouldn't want us to have to start our first semester doing everything online because you lose so much if you aren't able to participate in labs & sim. It's the furthest from an ideal situation for the students & the schools :(. I haven't considered applying anywhere else tbh, & at this point wouldn't want to go through another application cycle.
If they are not prepared to go remote now, what if they are in the same boat come next fall 2021? Lets say the situation has not improved. Have they promised that they won't cancel again? Because if they defer to fall 2022 people are not going to be happy... I think this is why the other colleges have decided to move forward. They recognize that this pandemic is going to take many years to recover from. They don't want to hold people back.
For everyone who’s anxious & concerned (including myself), I did email them regarding this & they responded with this.
“Dear Nicole,
Thank you for email and sharing your concerns. The COVID-19 situation is fluid and we are continually adapting to progress our current students through the program and plan for the future. Right now, we plan to offer the program with new students beginning in fall 2021. We don't know exactly what that will look like at this time. Please be assured that our priority is to administer a quality program and advance students to earn their Bachelor's of Science degrees in Nursing.
Best regards,

Hi everyone,
I understand everyone's frustration regarding all of this. The concord campus has been deferred a semester as well. Even if all of you did pass your first semester of nursing school you would not be able to do your second semester due to the concord campus being the bigger priority. They are not allowed to go into the hospital this semester, so they will need to do their hands-on clinical practice next semester while taking the lecture theory courses this semester along with their labs.
If all of you did attend this year and pass, you would still be deferred a semester regardless maybe even a year due to the concord campus being a bigger priority and then semester 4 hayward students having med surg 2 during your med surg semester. Regardless, the way to handle this situation is to adapt.
Just know that you have a spot in the program, not many people will be able to have a spot due to programs cutting their cohort size due to the pandemic. If you would like to try and get a start in Spring 2021, then go for it and have an earlier start.

“Right now we plan to offer...” So does this mean it could change? IDK I could be reading too much into it. LOL. It’s a stressful situation and given that her response was a bit vague and empty, it did not do much assuring. Did you explicitly ask if there is a chance of them cancelling fall 2021 if the situation does not improve?

I didn't ask that explicitly, but if someone wants to ask them go ahead. I did ask them if things aren't looking much different by this time next year, will they choose to go ahead with distance learning. I feel like we're reading a bit far into it tbh. It is in their best interest as a school to bring us back fully (in person clinical, lecture, lab & sim) when it's safe to do so. Personally, I would hate to do online clinical's with sims, & unless they'd lower our tuition a significant amount, I wouldn't want to pay the same & not even be able to go into the lab or be able to practice any of those really important foundational skills you learn the first semester.
I don't feel like we are reading too far into it. This is a year of our lives not being able to move forward. It's a year of potentially lost wages after graduation. I came to terms with "adapting" and being deferred one year. I was even grateful about not having to do online nursing classes. But not being given a definitive answer to "will I potentially have to wait another year on top of this one already if this doesn't improve" is beyond anxiety inducing. Potentially two years of time and wages lost? Potentially two years of not being able to move on with my life and gain experience to build a career and a life. Not being able to give a definitive answer to whether or not they could potentially cancel fall 2021 is not cool. At least be upfront so people can make rational decisions based on their current individual circumstances.

I completely agree with this. The reality is that they will never give us a straightforward response. It does not work in their favor. If they tell us “hey there’s a chance we could defer an extra year” there is a great chance they will loose half or more of their cohort. So we are being kept in this limbo. I suggest being proactive and coming up with Plan B in case they do not have the staff or resources to transition to a hybrid, online or in person format.
Hi guys, I’m curious to see if there is anyone on this thread that is still on the waitlist? It’s mentally exhausting being strung along and given that the program doesn't start for another year I’m thinking I should just give up hope. If anyone happens to know how many people they've gone through or any other related info please share ?

Hey! I was on the waitlist for 5 weeks before I got in. But, I did reach out a while ago & they said they put 27 people on the waitlist this year, & last year they admitted 57% of the people on their waitlist. Tbh, I feel like there are going to be more people who give up their seat this year due to how long we have to wait. If you’re in a position where you can afford to wait & see what happens, I think you’ll have a chance.

Congrats on getting off the list! I'm sure you can relate when I say its a bit frustrating, especially since they do not release rankings. Did they tell you what number you were when they offered you a spot? I'm trying to figure out roughly how many they have gone through. I thought about emailing them to ask but I feel like they'll just say they can't release that information.

Thank you! And yes, it was very frustrating & anxiety inducing. Honestly though, it wouldn’t hurt to reach out to them via email & ask roughly where you are on the waitlist, even if you just get a general idea. I was never told where I was or what number/ranking I had. However, given how challenging & uncertain this period of time is & how long we’re expected to wait, it’s not unreasonable to ask for that. You may be surprised.

I understand completely. I recommend applying to different schools for Spring 2021 and seeing what happens. I know USF does not require any exams and the application is straightforward. What doesn’t sit well with me is that they cancelled and said the other campuses would follow them... it seems to me they were trying to prevent people that already got admitted from finding other options. Reality is that they are the only campus that has done this. They seem to be prioritizing their own needs ?
