CSUEB - Cal State East Bay Fall 2020

Published

Thought I'd start at Fall 2020 thread for CSUEB to see if anyone else here is preparing to apply for Fall 2020 in Hayward.

I'm finishing up my pre-reqs this Fall and just signed up for the TEAS. Getting pretty excited as I feel like some of my hard work is starting to pay off and just wondered if anyone else is too. Here are some of my stats: science GPA 4.0, cumulative 3.97, local admin points and health hours are good.

I've never written a personal statement before which is now required, anyone have any tips? I want as many of those 20 points possible as I can manage!

Hi! Yes I just saw the email the department sent out. I know the decision was made with every possible regards to the students, but it's hard to not feel disappointed & frustrated. Would anyone for our cohort be willing to make a facebook page for us? I would love to commiserate with & get to know everyone who got in/who plan on still attending in the fall of 2021. I have no doubt this will affect all the nursing schools myself & everyone else has applied to unfortunately. I am debating emailing the department & asking if they can defer any of us to start in the Spring @ the Concord campus, but I'm sure they've already tried to factor that in. I wonder how this will affect people applying for Spring 2021, & if they will even defer taking a cohort there.

I actually just emailed them about the Spring 2021 cohort. Will let you know what they say.

Thank you! I was wondering the exact same thing. I really hope they offer that as an option to us.

I too am filled with mixed emotions as I was just as excited as everyone else to start our nursing journey in just a couple of months. It's hard to not feel upset and frustrated about this, but I'm trying to tell myself that our situation could be worse and although it may not feel like it, it's probably the smartest choice to ensure a better learning experience for everyone. We shall patiently wait to see what else they have to say. If anyone happens to create facebook group, please let me know as I'd love to join. Hope everyone is well despite such unfortunate news ?

Also, just came across an article (not sure how accurate it is) stating that all CSU campuses will remain closed through the Fall semester and will continue with online instruction..

If no one else has created one yet, I've just made a facebook group for us ?

It's called "CSU East Bay Nursing Cohort Fall 2020"

(we can change the name later :C)

Thanks for making the group! Could you post the url to it, I can't seem to find it.

Yes! That would be great!

Is anyone else here slightly annoyed with East bay right now? You guys are all so positive and I’m not as good as you?.A year is a long time and as of right now no other CSU Fall 2020 nursing cohort has been deferred to Spring let alone a whole year until fall 2021. From what I have read on the statements given by CSU System schools last Tuesday is that most are still making concerted efforts to keep nursing and other science students somewhat on track to reach their goals through more flexible curriculum. I can’t help but feel like maybe East bay was not as flexible. Maybe someone can change my mind or has other input on this ?

I felt similarly, but I'm pretty sure other CSUs will follow suit. I received an email from SJSU to hold off from purchasing Castlebranch (screening service) because they have an update coming in a week and SFSU says they will have an update after June 1st. So, I think East Bay was just first in delivering the news.

@B-fantastic Hi, I understand your frustration about this situation. I am currently going into my 3rd semester at Cal State East Bay. I can say for certain that a big reason why they are deferring this incoming cohort is because a big factor is clinicals. With your first semester being clinicals in mental health and having a part of that in the outpatient setting there is a big chance that hospitals may not provide access to students. The nursing staff is trying to provide everyone for the incoming cohort(s) the best possible experience possible.

Take this time off that has been given to work on your mental health as a lot of people in the nursing program get frustrated and worried especially near finals and exams. I hope to see all of you at orientation in Summer 2021.

Hi! Yes, when I got the initial email 2 days ago I was feeling every single emotion possible & felt so defeated after working my *** off for 2.5 years to get the opportunity to be accepted into their fantastic program. I have a friend who got into Fresno state for nursing. I have another friend who got into Dominican & the USF. As of now neither have heard anything from their nursing schools about what will happen going forward, but I have a feeling this will definitely not be affecting only CSUEB. It will affect all of the CSU nursing schools in some way or another (& likely the ADN programs too); whether that means deferring the next incoming fall &/or Spring cohorts, severely limiting the clinical experiences new incoming students will have & pushing for like 90% of everything to be delivered online, or choosing to suspend their program entirely & not take any new applicants at all. I was shocked when they said they aren’t able to defer us to Spring, but there’s no way that the department will take a Spring 2021 cohort & give them priority over us. I have heard from current students over in Concord that the first semester students are really struggling. Apparently for next semester they will only be able to do 1 clinical day per week, & the dean is fighting for them to be able to come into the lab once a week to be able to practice their skills. It sounds like a nightmare, & I feel so bad for the first semester students who’ve been pretty much completely robbed of some of the most important foundational experiences they paid for & now can’t really have. I’m sure this month & next month the rest of the CSU’s will come out with their decisions, but I’m hoping East Bay can come up with some sort of compromise should things start to get better for us here. As awful & disappointing as it is, our seats aren’t going anywhere & that is huge. We all worked hard & fought our way to get to this point, & none of us are here by accident. As frustrating as it is, I have to have some level of respect them for not wanting to compromise the quality of our education by dumping us into this mess b/c they have a reputation to uphold & want to be sure they’re still sending out well prepared graduates.

@Mochiiiii @CoffeecRey @Nicole Reavis thank you guys so much for the thoughtful responses and input! Definitely gave me a different perspective and attitude towards everything. Also knowing that I’m not alone in the initial feeling of frustration and sadness.
