CSUDH Entry MEPN Program - Fall 2010 Applicants

Published

i've been following a few threads and i love the excitement and anticipation of those waiting for acceptance letters/phone calls to a particular program and the camaraderie that it creates. i would love to get a thread going to show support and updates for those of us who have/are applying to cal state dominguez hills mepn program for fall 2010. i submitted my portfolio and application on november 30th. i was told that i should expect an interview in january. this is the only program i'm applying to. i know some may say that isn't smart, but i've done alot of research and it is the best/only one that meets all of my needs: prereqs, location, program duration, nclex pass rate and cost. being 30 and already having an expensive master's from usc in a field that i have decided to walk away from in order to follow my heart, i know that this program is the one for me. so i'm stepping out on faith and claiming my spot in the fall 2010 cohort. in my workshop, they said that they only expect to accept 35-40 students for fall. would love for others to share their experience with applying to this program and hopefully many of us will start this journey together are csudh in the fall! good luck to everyone!

Hi everyone and good luck as you go through the interview process. I happened across this thread (even though I should be studying!) and saw some questions about the program addressed to current students, so I thought I would answer.

I am in Cohort 5, so I am in my second semester of the program. I am really happy with the program overall and am happy that I decided on the MEPN program. It is not a perfect program and we, as students, definitely have a list of things we would change if we could. But overall I am so happy to finally be in nursing school, and I am really happy with the quality of my peers; the good definitely outweighs the bad.

Here are some suggestions/comments that you may find helpful:

  • Be patient with the process. Nothing in this program happens in a very timely manner, so the sooner you accept that fact, the better. It can be VERY frustrating, but that is just the way it is. Stressing over it or complaining about it doesn't change it, so you just have to try and accept it and move on. (We literally didn't find out about our classes and clinical sites until a week or so before we started last August.) However, I have heard similar complaints from students in other nursing programs, so I don't think CSUDH is too unusual in this regard.
  • On working: There are people in the program who are working, though not necessarily full time. It is possible if you are someone with really good study habits and don't mind having very little personal time, but it will create a great deal of stress and you will probably feel like you are always playing catch-up. Also, if you are working, you will need to manage your work schedule around your school schedule and not the other way around. They will not accept "I have to work" as an excuse to change classes or rotations. So your work schedule would have to be VERY flexible.
  • If you are trying to decide between a community college AA program and this program, know that you will probably receive better clinical training in the AA program. We do have a lot of classes that are required of master's level education (policy, ethics, research) and honestly, they detract from the clinical skills we are trying to master. You just have to decide what is more important to you, based on what you will likely want to do after you graduate.
  • If you are accepted and find yourself sitting around bored in the summer, spend some time trying to memorize basic lab values (electrolytes, etc.) and understanding acid-base balance. Having these under your belt will help you down the road.

Good luck!!

Hey akuku,

Yes i took patho. Who told you this!? Uh oh. Are they doing it random lotto or actually taking into account prerequs and whatnot? I wonder why so few people applied...

Genzey, i am currently taking Patho... its a lot of studying.Well, i got the information from someone who knows someone in the department. They have already started calling for interviews.I hope they have given you a call already. For me..i guess i will have to wait for another yr.It sucks...

Hey check your mycsudh website under application status. Mine at the bottom now says "you have been admitted to the university." I'm not sure if that means I am admitted to the nursing program yet. Does anyone know? Did your status change yet?

Specializes in i can read really good lol.

just checked mine still says that my appllication is complete and being sent to the appropriate place. ugh i think that means you are in, you only get accepted into the university if you get into the program , so YaY !!! you got in. From reading the previous threads that was the case only they got the letter in the mail before the screen was updated so maybe this year they are doing it different. once again congrats, the wait continues for me

Hey Patiently, did you receive your official doc indicating admission.

How was the interview?.

How many people intervied you?.

After the interview , how long did it take for them to respond with a positive outcome that you are in>

Had you completed your pathophysiology class?.
