Hi Everyone!

I see that there is no thread for the cohort for Spring 2015 for the ABSN Program yet! So this is my official attempt at making a thread for it! Please use this thread as a place for comments, questions and admission decision updates! I actually have been offered conditional acceptance already and would love to meet future classmates! Thanks guys!

That's so great! :D

When did you apply? And when did you receive your evaluation?

Thanks Elena2! I applied online and mailed out all my transcripts (all class completed) on October 2nd 2014 and received the evaluation Sunday, November 23rd and at 4am Monday, November 24th I received the conditional acceptance email (the status on mycsusm application also changed too). Now I'm just waiting on that darn Financial aid package to be done. I called the Financial Aid office and they supposedly don't workout the FA packages until after you've been conditionally admitted. I have a week more to make my decision.

agonzalez4321, do you mind sharing your points? I received 44 out of 52. It's so strange. I turned in all my transcripts, test scores, and application on October 1st. On November 19th, I received my evaluation. But since then I haven’t received any notification from San Marcos. :/

My point total was 33.

It turns out that there was an an error with the initial acceptance email for Spring 2015. Yesterday I touched basis with the office about orientation and the next steps and that's when they mentioned that they had made an error. I'm in for Spring 2015, but I wasn't provided with the orientation information (the event passed already), the background checks, and other clearances. It's crunch time for them and me. I'm hoping for everything to get processed soon and in time. Hopefully I get to join you all for Spring 2015! If not, there's always Summer 2015. Everything happens for a reason.

Hi agonzalez4321. The same thing happened to me! Tuesday, I was accepted into the Spring 2015 cohort and that same day I submitted my Intent to Enroll (and $150 enrollment deposit). But the very next day, my advisor called to tell me there was a data entry error, so he took away my acceptance for Spring 2015 and pushed it to Summer 2015.

Are they willing to accommodate you for Spring 2015? Is it a sure thing? Or do they still need to ask the higher ups for permission? Keep me posted!

Oh darn Elena2, a similar situation happened to you! When I found out on wednesday, I mentioned to them that I had resigned my new promotion. I have conditional acceptance. I touched in with them today about the background check but they said I have to wait until next week for that email.

Hi, I am in the process of applying, for those of you who got in.. how are you planning on paying for the program? I often times here that it is extremely difficult to get financial aid for a second bachelors degree. Any input would be appreciated, it would be awful to receive an acceptance and then realize I can't go because I can't afford it.

I have recently been through this program and I can tell you that it is challenging to find funding and you should make an appointment with the CSUSM financial advising office to talk about your specific options. The ABSN program is operated through Extended Learning and they currently charge $470 per lecture unit and $600 per clinical unit. This adds up to around $6800 per semester just for tuition. In contrast, regular undergraduate tuition is only $289 per unit, so the accelerated program is a lot more than you may have paid for your undergraduate degree. Just something to keep in mind as you can probably pick up a second degree in nearly any other field for a lot less money.

Everyone automatically qualifies for somewhere around $13,000 per year in federal loans, but with three terms of about $7000, you can see that that still leaves a shortfall of around $8000 per year in tuition costs not including books or living expenses. Many people in my cohort took out private second loans through a bank or credit union. Some got small scholarships. A few worked part time, which is definitely possible during most semesters if you can find a very flexible job (bartending, babysitting, CNA work, etc), but it's not for everybody. I would say the majority of people rely on some combination of loans and help from family. I hope that helps.
