CSU Los Angeles School of Nursing (CSULA Fall 2011)

Published

How many here has applied for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at CSULA?

I know it is a little bit early to talk about this, but I just submitted all of my grades, TEAS scores (ATI sends them to CSULA SON for you), and notification of health care work experience (dental assistant) from an employer.

It has been a long and anxious wait till April/May for letters of acceptance to come in, so I hope this thread can help everyone who is dealing with the same anxiety and stress that we are all dealing with.

So If anyone would like to share their overall "points" score, or questions regarding pre-reqs TEAS etc. I would be alright to share all of you mine, and answer some questions that I might know.

Thanks and godspeed everyone!

There is NO prefererance for ethnicity in the SON at CSULA. This is a totally transparent point system as per the website. The points are tallied per the admission process after verification, put in excel, rank ordered and as many slots as the State provides funding for, that's how many get in. The points needed are not set but vary with each applicant pool's strength.

No no no, the apps for Nursing open Sep 1st and the deadline is Dec. 1st.

The counselor said it's better to send the supplemental info to SON first, then wait until Oct. 1st to apply to the school.

I was reading earlier comments on here, and I'm not sure why so many stated Micro is not counted.

Maybe not previously, but it counts this year. Which sucks for me, because it's pulling my G.P.A. down =(

since when is micro counting for pre req GPA?

i know the grade is due like in June but it counts for your overall GPA not for pre req GPA

You're absolutely correct.

I spoke with Monica and she said they only look to see if the student has passed the courses.

The reason it threw me off is because it appeared in the Supplemental Apps.

Anyone taking the TEAS at CSULA?

I purchased the study guide and have about 2 weeks to study.

Oh I'm taking it this Friday. I studied over the summer and tested myself and got a mid 80 score. Now I tested myself yesterday with no studying and got 90+% in all areas. I'm still gonna study my weak points which is the English portion and some of the science. I mean the science is easy but the way they word the questions is really dumb IMHO.

Daisys are you a transfer? Applying anywhere else? Stats if I may ask lol.

I'm transferring from citrus college. I'm taking the o-chem that is needed for CSULB and CSUSB. Then I'm so flad to be donr with pre reqs

Ahhhhh, I cannot wait to get my hands on the study guide.

I'm extremely nervous.

I spoke with Jim yesterday, and he said although only English and Reading are counted into the ranking, they still consider all the areas. Math is what really scares me.

Transferring from LA Valley College. Not applying anywhere else out of pure hopelessness that I will get in.

I spoke with a counselor from Channel Islands, she straight up told me not to even bother applying if I'm not a resident in the area OR intermediate in Spanish.

Pre-req GPA = 3.31 so 4 pts.

Cumm GPA = 3.5 so 4 pts.

TEAS = haven't taken yet.

Health-care experience = 3 pts, and verifications from 2 previous employers and a letter of recommendation from a Chem professor.

To be honest, English has always been my strongest suit in these tests so I'm not TOO worried about that, although I don't want to get arrogant.

This might sound silly, but would a CPR certification count anywhere?

nice stats! Math is extremely easy. A lot of perimeter and add/sub problems like balancing an account.

My stats are:

Pre-req: 3.83=10pts

Overall GPa: 3.15 and raising = 2 pts maybe 3 by end of fall

Teas?

No healthcare or volunteer. Do letters of rec count for points? I am working on getting a CNA job since I am certified or volunteer during the spring.

Don't worry about the teas I think you will do fine. Especially in the needed areas.

Too bad about CI. I'm also applying to CSUSB and CSULB. I actually don't have a top choice, I just want to get in!

Yeah, I too am planning on volunteering during the spring.

Letters of rec don't count, but I heard some people have sent those and they can never hurt! =D

You definitely have a better chance of getting in though, since my health-care experience is nowhere near as up-close and direct as a CNA's.

I can't stop beating myself over the damn pre-reqs GPA.

Your pre req is fine. Your over all GPA made up for it.

As far as volunteering, don't waste your time. If you already have healthcare experience and have verification for it then you will only get 3 points regardless if you volunteer.

What I am mad at CSULA is that they are letting 2nd degree bachelors in this year. Which is BS since they also have a chance to get into the EL-MSN program. So basically they have double the chance of getting into nursing scool at CSULA. Plus the 2nd degree bachelors people get extra points over us w/o a bachelors. To me, they did their time, got their undergrad degree and should move on and let us get our bachelors degree. But that's just my opinion. I honestly picture myself at CSUSB and I don't know why. I went to their info session and I feel that I have a good chance to get in there plus the fact that cousin graduated from their BSN program. Plus CSUSB although in a crappy area is opposite to traffic I will encounter and having 6am clincials, traffic will not help that. You should apply there too. The cal state schools take application til Nov 30th.

I just contacted my previous employer (I worked at a MD office) and asked her to write me a letter, and this employer too (now I'm at a home health care).

I didn't know the school was doing that this year!!!

How severe were the budget cuts, btw... do you know?

Probably bad as usual. I just took my teas :/

Got 82% overall and 80 English (4pts) and 79 reading (3pts) so that tallies me to 19 pts. I going to retake it next week and try ti do better. I was aiming for above 90 in all sections and did pretty bad ( to me I did bad) .19 points isn't even competitive enough to make first round cuts (I heard around 20+pts) so I hope I can find a healthcare job because if my teas doesn't improve them max pts I can get if I get a job is about 22 and that was last years cut off.
