CSU Los Angeles School of Nursing (CSULA Fall 2011)

Published

How many here has applied for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at CSULA?

I know it is a little bit early to talk about this, but I just submitted all of my grades, TEAS scores (ATI sends them to CSULA SON for you), and notification of health care work experience (dental assistant) from an employer.

It has been a long and anxious wait till April/May for letters of acceptance to come in, so I hope this thread can help everyone who is dealing with the same anxiety and stress that we are all dealing with.

So If anyone would like to share their overall "points" score, or questions regarding pre-reqs TEAS etc. I would be alright to share all of you mine, and answer some questions that I might know.

Thanks and godspeed everyone!

SO basically turn in the SON application ASAP and of course apply to the school as soon as it opens up....SO i apply to the nursing school before I apply to the actual school....

it just seems weird that they open the nursing school applications a month before transfers apply to the school

if I could i would have applied to csula sooner and just taken some bs courses while i finish the real pre reqs (all i have left is crit thinking and intro to psych which i am doing this summer, so all pre reqs including micro and speech are done by the time i apply:))

ok and I will take the nutrition and anthro classes as co reqs. I will be quitting my job once i get accepted to a NS so doing more than fulltime will actually be doable for me :) for once lol

alright

how about all the other people who are transfers that applied and got accepted....

when did you apply to CSULA the school only

when did you apply to CSULA SON

were you able to take the TEAS @ CSULA, if not where did you take it? Was it V or version 4?

I heard version V is hard, harder than version 4.....but that was the science.... all CSULA needs is the reading and english any tips from you guys to get at least 4-5 points for the TEAS portion....I need to make up for my bad overall GPA...(only going to get 2-3 points MAX :crying2:)

well its all speculation but I am a researcher and so I want to know as much as possible to prepare....plus I am doing micro notecards and I am pretty bored LOL

Orientations to the school of nursing are given the summer before the school starts taking applications. At that time you will be given ALL the information you need to enter the program. You must schedule the orientation by calling the advisement office. I did my orientation in July. I applied online to CSULA on October 3. I received my CIN via email on October 19 and then downloaded the school of nursing application (Supplemental Application), filled it, and hand-carried it with my transcripts to the advisement office in the Simpson Tower.

I also sent payment for the TEAS version 4 to be conducted at Cal State LA. I took that test on Friday, November 12, but there was also another wave of testing being offered on Saturday, November 13. Cal State LA conducted the TEAS only on those two dates, and it was a paper and pencil test. When I got my results about a week later, I did well in my English and reading. But then found out that I would be disqualified from the program because I scored a 39 on the Math portion (because I thought math and science would not count, I chilled during those sections.) So I took the TEAS a second time at Rio Hondo College a month later (December 18). That test was computerized, and you get the results on the spot! Rio Hondo offers the test Monday - Saturday all throughout the day, but you must schedule an appointment.

Bottom line is, you don't need to be first in line to assure yourself a spot for the TEAS. If you take it at Cal State LA, they will open up as many classrooms as they need to accommodate all applicants. When I took it there were over 200 students who came for testing! And I heard there were even more students on Saturday! As long as you take the TEAS before December 31, and have taken it no more than twice in the same period, you should be good.

"I am wondering if you can just have them give your results and not have them mail it, (i dont trust places to mail stuff for me anymore, not even transcripts, i ALWAYS pick them up and mail them myself, certified mail) or can you print them online? If I take it this summer and do really well in the portions that CSULA looks at, when I apply in sept/oct 2011, I can just mail everything and that way NOTHING will be missing."

-No ATI wire sends them to CSULA. At that same time, you can also see your results online and save to PDF, and then send to CSULA SON advisement for review

"gosh its expensive to take the dang test! I saw the package of the study manual, and two online practice tests to be $85!!!! WOW"

-Remember to buy version 4 study guide and NOT version 5 study guide. I made the mistake of buying version 5 and come test day, although it prepared me well for english, I was ill-prepared overall for version 4 during the first assessment....

"I have a question about the bolded

can you explain the numbers?"

those are the percentile scores that I was placed in during the TEAS. Percentile scores are Different from Individual scores. for example, during the first assessment, although I scored 85% correct on the reading portion, but the average score nationwide was an 85.7% (70th percentile), I didn't score high. Hence why I got a 41 percentile. the percentile gives you points for admission, not individual scores.

When you practice, your individual scores have to be above the national average individual scores, if you want to be in the 70th percentile or more

2011 national TEAS average individual scores

Reading 85.7%

Math 66.8%

Science 63.0%

English74.6%

"they wont take the best reading from ANY test and the best english from ANY test, or do they take the most points you get from ONE test?"

-most points for one test. ;)

no worries, I will talk to the dept and get it all cleared on monday :D

many people in the fall 2010 cohort (last years acceptances) still needed to take those courses, and still managed to take nursing program courses.

I know of some people who are in the program who haven't taken those courses yet!

but since we are a new cohort, I'll make sure to get that cleared for us when I hand in my acceptance slip to the dept.

I hope we don't need to take it before fall. If we do, the class will be under CSULA Extended Education (not government funded) which charges $271 per unit.

the good thing is, NTRS 250 will be an online course, so we wouldn't have to worry about the number of people taking it, or going to school for summer.

the bad news is that since it is a 4 unit course, it would cost $1084.

I don't know about you all, but that's not cheap at all!

So why not take Nutrition (or any prerequisite class) at a community college??? I took Nutrition at Pasadena City College last Spring along with Anatomy and Chemistry. It was an online course, 3 semester units. At $23 per unit it comes out to a mere $69. Pasadena City College and other CCs are offering Nutrition in the summer. Some are online, others are not.

If I were you, I'd get Nutrition out of the way THIS SUMMER, even though the school allows you to take it as a co-requisite.

I'll find out first from advisement before I make the decision in taking it.

after spring, I will be finished with all lower division and all upper division general education requirements. (not upper division nursing requirements and nutrition of course)

since the program only allows you to take 10-11 units per quarter,(blocked sections), I really wouldn't mind taking nutrition along with it, to boost up registration status (over here, registration depends on the number of units that you have taken during your collegiate career: freshman registration: 0-43 units, soph 44-90 units, etc). the more units you have, the better your registration date will be.

Wow thanks for the info!

Now I have an idea about when to apply and all that. Do they post up when orientation is on CSULA website?

I am definitely thinking I'll take the teas at Rio hondo this summer to get it out of the way.

Why buy version 4 study guide

because CSULA grades version 4 for admission and NOT version 5

I thought that all schools are taking version V now.

They are all taking version V I think from spring 2012 or fall 2012 and onward. But for fall 2011 I definitely know most accepted Teas IV except: SFSU, I think Sonoma State, CSUSB?, I think CSUDH, lol I'm just listing the ones I didn't apply to because of the Teas V for fall 2011. =) I hope that helps!

Did you get into CSULB or CSULA?

it's official!

NTRS 250 is NOT a pre req for the fall. it is a Co req in the fall if you didn't take it.

I went to the advisement to confirm.

also, for those who had made it, and did not submit comm 150 and micro grades before June 22nd, your spot WILL be revoked. so make sure you guys send them on time if you all haven't!

if you choose not to take these classes, please call advisement to drop your position in order for you to be eligible for admission in the fall of 2012 if you are not taking micro or comm 150 right now. failure to respond may disqualify you in the next application pool of 2012.

But, if you have already taken and submitted these courses, just enjoy your summer :D

If I can only give you enough kudos! Lol. Thank you for clarifying!

Well I just hope they do.the same kind of ranking process next year.

The only thing I truely worry about is the CA budget screwing me over and that CSULA either refuses transfers or limits them like csulb did this semester. That is my biggest worry.

I don't want to try my hardest and then get rejected because the budget couldn't afford me
