Did anyone apply to CSU Bakersfield? I applied for the Spring 2010.
I took a look at CSUB's scoring guide for entrance into NS and was perplexed by the fact that points are granted to those who are academically and economically disadvantaged.
It was also surprising to me that there are as many points granted for being "educationally disadvantaged" than there are for being a veteran. What does it mean to be educationally disadvantaged?
I applied to a local JC (in central CA) last year and on the application form I was asked if I was a vet, on aid, or had kids on aid - all were plus points, the total of which determined placement for a registration appointment. I actually got minus points for having an undergraduate degree. My registration appt. was so late that every class I needed was totally impacted. Even the wait lists were closed.
AHH ok, I just got accepted to CSUB yesterday for the winter 2010 quarter(in time for pathophysiology, though i still have to send my high school and other colleges' transcripts) but I won't be hearing anything about acceptance to the nursing program until late December(if all goes well and there is a spring 2010 class). UGHH the wait is so horrible as if I feel insane!
For the TEAS, well it's very hard to predict what's on the test. Everyone has a different version and you will recieve random questions. I didn't get so many anatomy questions but others might have. I had more physics, chemistry, and earth science questions which is why I thought the science sections were easy(I took APs in high school). For the math, you do need to memorize formulas. At least remember the ones for trapezoids, circles and triangles. I think there were some trigonometry in there(if you took AP calculus in high school, you should be ok). There are lots of word problems in math so try to use estimation too and think outside the box. the reading is like any other reading tests. just read, comprehend, and answer questions. it mainly tests you on how well you understand concepts that you just read. English was crazy, but I thought it was ok since I tutor foreigners in English language. there are lots of unfamiliar vocab words(if you took the SAT or ACT, then you should be familiar with them). you should use context clues to help you what the words mean(that portion killed me). other than that, the grammar was fun, literally, well i think so.
About your other questions for the CSU. as far as I know, you can have as many prereqs left when you apply for the nursing school BUT as soon as the semester of those remaining many prereqs are finished, then you need to be done with ALL your prereqs. for example, you can have 3 prereqs left and apply for CSUB nursing for your intended semester of entrance. when the semester of those prereqs in progress is over, then you should be done with all of your prereqs and then start the nursing program(except pathophysiology). I have 3 prereqs in progress planned for completion by the end of fall 2009 because I applied for the spring. as for GE, you can have only 2 GE courses left by the time you start the nursing program. when I applied, I filled out all my GE requirements. So if you did not finish history yet, then it's ok IF that is one of your 2 classes remaining for GE left. did you take or pass any AP or IB exams in high school? those tests with passing scores grant you free college credit for GE. I took AP US history and I got free 6 sem/9 qrt units for GE in both the history requirement and humanities. i think it's a maximum of 2 GE courses left from the CSU-GE BREADTH areas. but on some papers it said 3.
finally, good job in getting As for your sciences. I'm really scared about my last prereqs because I want As in them and fall 2009 is going to be my hardest semester yet because I have anatomy, physio, and human life span.
Thanks so much for the help! I am scared because anatomy is the only class i got a C in other then then I have all A's . The teas test is giving me a headache because I am not to sure what to expect. I am just hoping for the best. CONGGRATTTSSSSS on getting into the school thats great :lol2:
:p:cheers::balloons::barf01::roll When you applied to Bakersfield you were all done with the GE's nothing left? Cause you said that I can have 2 GE's when starting the nursing program but when I apply for the school in general does that apply as well? Also for pathophysiology that is taken at Bakersfield right because I do not see it offered anywhere else and when I looked the Bakersfield nursing website it says you need to have it done by a certain time but that date was for people who are applying in the winter or spring not fall. Hang in there I know waiting is just horrible but there is nothing else to do:crying2:. Oh yea when you got accpeted was it through the mail, email, phone call? Thanks for the help

Thanks! When I applied, I had to fill out a sheet in the nursing application that showed what GEs you completed. Basically it was filling out the CSU-GE reqs. I only had 1 in progress for humanities. There are also upper division courses but I filled those out too because I plan to take them at CSUB for winter 2010 along with pathophysio. after the winter quarter, if things work well, then I start my nursing major courses for the spring quarter. for fall, as in your case, you fill in your courses and if you didnt take pathophysio, you have to take it in the summer before you start your nursing classes in the fall. I got accepted through something called "myCSUB." i thk all other CSUs have this because I was a freshman at SFSU too and I had a "mySFstate." I called them today to see if all my documents and transcripts had came in and they recieved everything so they changed my incomplete admission and pending application to a "congrats for being accepted." BUT I advise you to call them constantly once you sent in all your papers and transcripts a long time ago because these things will pile up, especially for nursing. and no problem, glad to help! if you have anymore questions, please ask away! that's why we're here, to help others.
I am glad I joined this forum because it is always nice to get help and hopefully give back as well. For the patho are are taking at at Bakersfield right because most community colleges do not offer it? Can I also ask why you are taking humanities? It is not a core class right just something you picked from the CSU paper? So to be sure you made it into the school in general but the nursing program you are still waiting on? So since they have not said spring is cancelled you are hoping to enroll for Spring? When is a good time to send in your transcripts? Before or after you have submitted the online application?
Good news! I visited CSUB when I was driving back from Las Vegas to nor cal! I met the person who emailed us and she said I have a really good chance in getting in! I have a really good feeling too that there will be a spring 2010 class for CSUB nursing. We reviewed my application one-on-one and she told me if she should send out student rankings via email because she wasn't so sure and she asked me since I was the first one to have ever vistied her that time. She told me that I have 58 points out of 85 which was pretty high. She even showed me the statistics for the fall 2009 and the lowest point they too was a 45-48. they took 37 students for that class because 2 declined and they only accept 35. she said if I get As on my last 2 prereqs, then I have a great chance in getting in. the only classes that matter the most are these 8: micro, anat, physio, chem, stats, eng, comm, and critical thinking. they count for your GPA. the other prereqs, you can pass with a C and they wont care. that's what they literally told me. when I saw my ranking for the spring, i was about rank 21-14/35. she said that can change if I do well with my last 2 important prereqs so this comming semester, I will definitely try to get As in anatomy and physio. she also said that those who did not take pathophysio may be granted conditional acceptance to take pathophysio in the winter. she also was wondering why a nor cal kid from the San Francisco Bay Area was going to apply to a So Cal school even though it wasn't my service area. I told her that it's more competitive in nor cal schools but she didn't seem to understand. then I told her that CSUB was my number one school now because I told their staff that I really liked what they did with the curriculum and how it's only 21 months, that's why i like CSUB now. she seemed really happy to hear that and she liked people who gave feedback about things like that. I don't know, but I left really happy and I have a VERY good feeling that i'll get in for the Spring 2010 class. now, i'm going to apply for Humboldt State's nursing school.
I also was able to plan and rearrange my GE and future classes with her, so now, when the fall semester is over, I'll have no undergrad CSU-GE left when I go to CSUB for the winter! as long as you follow your community college's CSU-GE reqs and finish them, then you'll be ok. because once you get to CSUB for schoo, you start upper division GE and classes there. now, I'm just waiting for my orientation packet and letters from the mail. So excited!
WOW! I am so happy for you and so glad to hear that there will be a spring or a high chance of a spring semester. That is great news for you. I am so glad you scored well too. I hope this is good news for me as well. I am taking my teas aug 29, and I made one for sept 12. I really hope I do well. The only part I am worried about is that you said they only took 35 students, and that is not much at all. For patho if I did not take it and they accepted me would I do it during the summer semester? I am so glad that they literally told you they won;t care much for a C. Does that count for anatomy too because it has been haunting me for some time now. How did she help you rearrange your CSU-GE like what other classes did she tell you to take? Thanks so much for the feedback it was so helpful and again CONGRATSSS:up:
:balloons:. Hope to talk to you soon!

Yes correct, if they conditionally accept you for Fall, but you never took patho, then you take it at CSUB for the summer. they will reserve your spot until you finish patho then being in fall. the only classes they care about are Anatomy, Physio, Micro, Chem, Eng, Comm, Stats, and Crit think. those 8 are the important classes they want you to have As in. all the other such as nutrition, psyc, etc.. they dont care about because only those 8 prerqs are they classes they will derive your GPA in. So i'm sorry, but your C in anatomy will get counted :zzzzz.
at that time when I met with her, I asked a question about GE and she helped me plan my schedule. it all came down to my community college work. So if I finish all my GE there, then I don't need to take any GE at CSUB, which is my plan to finish all my GE next semester in the fall. but the down part is that I have 19 units, so it's going to be my toughest semester, yet they said they dont care much if you get a C or not because it's just GE, so I'm going to take Anatomy and physio more seriously than my other GE classes.
I hope you get in for Fall as well! I left CSUB happy and I left the admissions lady with a happy face, i think that's indicating something soon:wink2:.
When I calculated my score for all 8 classes with a C in anatomy it came to a 3.73 so I am really hoping that its good enough to get me in. As for overall gpa which includes the nutrition and such that does count for points to so I want to try and score as high as possible. Did she say what grade you needed to get in patho in order to make it in the program because it was just a provisional acceptance?
I also forgot to ask I was looking at the scoring sheet and it has the points for pre rec gpa and that means the 8 classes right? And then it says math/ science gpa? What is that for just the science and math no English or communication? I do not see a score for overall gpa? Do they not care about that?
no she didnt say what grade for patho and it's just the 8 prereqs that count for the prereq GPA. for the math and science GPA, that is within the 8 prereqs too but only including the math and science courses.
as for the overall college GPA, they dont care about it... that why she was really confident when she told me that they dont care if i got a C in lifespan or nutrition or other GE and prereqs(as long as i pass and finish them though hahaha) that dont matter to them. only the golden 8 prereqs. she said my GPA so far is a 3.8.... but that can change after I finish my last 2 prereqs.
any more questions?

I also forgot to ask how many pre recs are you allowed to have in process by the time you submit your application? You need to get accepted into the school first before the nursing program are you accepted in the school? Do you know if you can have classes missing by the time you apply. I have not done history yet for CSU and I am planning to apply soon for fall is it ok that I didnt complete it?
