Hello everyone, I'm new to the site and I was wondering if there are any fellow CSN RN Spring '13 hopefuls out there. I just turned in my application today and I would love to get to know some of my potential classmates through this forum :)

I had titers done at Labcorp (ordered by my primary MD) and they billed my insurance over $1500!! But my insurance wrote off most of it and I only paid about $75. I would NOT recommend them unless you're sure that your insurance will cover/write off most of it. I have heard that The Vaccine Center is less expensive for both vaccines and titers.

Yeah, I just had a bunch of bloodwork done also. Wish I would have thought to add the titer. Through labcorp and my insurance it cost me over 300.00. I looked at my immunizations and I never even had an MMR ...I am older so they never gave them. I have had the mumps, measles, and chickenpox as a kid. I do have an updated tetorifice though. Jeez....I have spent so much at doctors in the last two months I can't believe I have to go back again!!! But it is what it is.....I'm going to ask my primary what I should do.

Hello i wonder if this includes admin fee they charge every visit. And did they tell you about the hep a shots?

It doesnt include the admin fee which is $16 for one shot or $25 for two or more shots...I didnt ask about hep a because i dont think the nursing students need hep a but i could be wrong about that

Wonder how much a titer would be...I am in my forties and had chicken pox as a kid but we didn't go to doctors!!! LOL....I have the big round scar from the small pox vaccine! I called the health department and they said the hep b was 70.00 a shot. I wonder what happened with that. I asked when I picked up my packet and the lady said to wait until orientation to do immunizations. I wonder if they will offer them at the school. I do have insurance but I need to check and see if it even covers immunizations.

I am facing the same issue about having the chicken pox...because i was the first out of the three children to get the chickenpox my mother thinks she MAY have taken me to the doctor but she knows for a fact that she didnt take my brothers when they came down with it after me...so i have been on the phone with Kaiser and have been faxing them everything to get my records released to me and hopefully there will be an official diagnosis

I hope the school offers the immunizations way cheaper...i knew the program was going to be costly to start but now adding everything up that i will need to pay for before my pell grant is made available to me is making my head spin

we have to have hep A and hep B...you need the two in the series of hep B before starting school. My kids were required to have hep B but I was born long, long ago...ha ha...

If you think you've has the chicken pox you can get the titer done at CPL labs- I paid 35 bucks as a cash patient last year so it shouldn't be too much more than that now- you will need a doctors order for the lab itself but most doctors will order it if you ask during your physical.

Also if you have ever done any type of food handling that requires a health card you've probably had the Hep A vaccine- I got the shots when I went to the health district to get food handlers health card... I don't believe they are required for the program but just an FYI :)

I went to the Vaccine Center down on 95N/N.Rainbow for all my vaccines and 2-step TB test. It's the one that CSN has tie-up with, cheaper compared to Walgreens, CVS. The SNHD charges admin fee per vaccine and the locations might not be convenient for you, travel-wise. Your insurance will not cover your adult immunizations unless your doctor will say that it is "medically" necessary. School requirement is not a reason for reimbursement accdg to my insurance, HPN. You can request for blood titers from your doctor. The Vaccine Center also does titers. The school will also give you info which insurance they have a tie-up with.

For now, just get your documents in order if you have your vaccines already. If you still need vaccines, wait for the orientation because the school will give you important dates and what vaccines can be combined with the TB testing, etc..

Here's what I paid for last May 2012 - student price at the Vaccine Center

PPD/TBtest ($25) x2 =50

Varicella($110)x2 = 220

MMR ($84) x2 =168

HepB ($55) x3=165 (the 3rd round required prior to start of 2nd sem)

I believe their TdaP is about ($65 or 75) x1 (I did this separately for free)

Thanks so much for all of the info! I actually just bought a Samsung laser printer from Fry's for $40! I have an inkjet printer that is very slow and the ink is expensive and needs to be replaced every 100 pages or so. I think the laser printer will just be less of a headache.

Can you recommend a good stethoscope? I have a hard time hearing some things (all those years of going to concerts as a kid is coming back to haunt me!) and I also don't want to spend $150+ on the littman cardiology one that tons of people recommend!

I kinda wish that you were on our class so you would be around to help us longer :D

Aww thanks! By the time you hit 2nd semester you will be a know it all too:p

I have a Littman classic II and have had no problems hearing anything! They are less than $100 and come in many colors. If you order online a lot of them do free engraving!

And with my laser printer I can print like 2000 pages per cartridge!
