CSN RN Spring 2013

U.S.A. Nevada

Published

Hello everyone, I'm new to the site and I was wondering if there are any fellow CSN RN Spring '13 hopefuls out there. I just turned in my application today and I would love to get to know some of my potential classmates through this forum :)

Aww thanks! By the time you hit 2nd semester you will be a know it all too:p

I have a Littman classic II and have had no problems hearing anything! They are less than $100 and come in many colors. If you order online a lot of them do free engraving!

And with my laser printer I can print like 2000 pages per cartridge!

Thanks! That stethoscope looks like a good deal I'll probably get that one!

I know I love the fact that you can print so many pages off of one cartridge...that's why I bought it :)

There will also be a Littman rep at NSO next week! And I believe the scopes are 10-20% off! I'll be there, acting like the boss of the NSNA :p

Oooh cool! Will they offer the engraving for free like the websites do?

We should all wear name tags with our all nurses names on them to orientation so we all know who we are :p

Hmm, I dunno, I never asked!

I did get my stethoscope engraved with my online name! I like it, and figured no one would wanna steal a steth that says SunshineDaisy*L*

Congratulations to everyone that got accepted. I would highly recommend the toolbox class. On the third week of ACE you will have to pass a 10 question math conversion test with 90% or better. If you don't, there is ONE opportunity to retake, if you don't pass that you are excused from the program. I don't know about anyone else, but I've spent a lot of $$$ and time trying to get accepted to nursing school, I wasn't about to let a math test ruin my opportunity. Yes, you can learn the calculations from a book and we do learn how to write a care plan in 1st semester so if you are confident in your calculations, you can take a pass on it. I cancelled a summer vacation that I had planned a year in advance to attend it and I am thankful everyday that I did.

I agree with Sunshine Daisy about the clipboard thing, I got mine on amazon for under $10. The rolling backpack has been a lifesaver, also on amazon for about $70. I don't even carry my books with me and my backpack is about 60 lbs. I recommend a laptop. I have an iPad with all of my books on it, but Angel is not compatible with safari and it's a HUGE hassle to navigate. I got the hard copy books and the ebooks and I have barely opened a regular book. I just like the option of having them in case the apocalypse happens. Pageburst is the ebook platform from Elsevier for mobile devices and it is fairly user friendly, (most of the time.)

Get extra name tags and have them EVERYWHERE (your car, your spouses car, your backpack, your purse, etc). I would definitely get the magnetic back and regret getting the pin version to save $$$. There is a trophy place on Torrey Pines & Sahara that can make extras quick, (in case you forget yours and need one pronto) and they are reasonably priced.

I would also start brushing up/learning medical terminology. I got the Mosby's med term flashcards, very helpful. I have also found quizlet to be VERY helpful, both in finding pre-made sets and for making sets of items for specific exams. They have a free app in the iTunes app store.

I wouldn't bother trying to read the textbooks too much before the assigned reading because as the content progresses if you get too far ahead it can get really confusing and you will have to re-read closer to lecture anyway. With that said, don't get behind on reading, either.

Good luck to everyone.

One last piece of advice, Amazon offers a student discount on their prime account. It is worth EVERY penny. Free two day shipping on almost everything. I have ordered at from them at least twice a week since getting the membership and I can't even begin to calculate what I've saved in shipping. I hardly even have to go to the store anymore. It has been a lifesaver for those weeks that require every moment of your time.

Great post!! I really appreciate you giving your time on this site to give advice. Did you buy your books on Amazon or at the school? And what is the clipboard called on Amazon so I can look for it. I have a droid EVO...are you saying I can load the ebooks on it? I was thinking of buying an IPAD but don't want to spend unecessarily. I have a laptop and if I can access the ebooks on my laptop, I'm not as concerned with the mobile unless while in clinical it is helpful?

It's a Saunder's clipboard. IMO I wouldn't spend the $$$ for the iPad for school. I used it for the first week and then ditched it for my laptop and yes I have my books loaded on there. I think you get a max of 5 devices for the ebooks. Like I said before, I have barely even opened a "real" book, except for my drug book, I use my laptop in lecture because I can switch between the ppt and the book and easily. I bought the book bundle at the bookstore, it was too much of a hassle to buy on amazon and you can't get the ebooks that way. If you want to forgo the ebooks I would go for amazon it will save a couple of hundred $$$. Any books that were not included in the bundle I got at amazon. Also, Davis RNotes ® are a lifesaver and super useful in clinical. I did not get any of the study guides and have survived, (so far.) I know some people that have droid phones but I hear all the time that they would prefer an apple device because of all of the compatible apps for apple, (and no, I don't work for Apple.)

In my experience NO electronic reference devices are allowed in clinical, but in the "real world" after school they get used all of the time and are a huge time and back saver.
