CSN RN Spring 2013

U.S.A. Nevada

Published

Hello everyone, I'm new to the site and I was wondering if there are any fellow CSN RN Spring '13 hopefuls out there. I just turned in my application today and I would love to get to know some of my potential classmates through this forum :)

The ATI test you take in Jan is just a basic how you learn type test. I wanna say it was like $109, and yes, you have to pay. You have them every semester as well and are $130. Sucky!

jeez...I'm glad I started saving money a while ago. yikes! :banghead:

No kidding! Nursing school is expensive! They don't tell you all the "extras" you need until you need them and then have to scramble! Invest in a heavy duty backpack too! I have a jansport with wheels and it is such a back saver! Also, this is just mo opinion, but buy a laser printer. You will go through a few trees while in nursing school! I bought a laser printer at Best Buy for like $150. The cartridges are expensive ($60-$70), but last so long! I went in with a friend, so we split the cost of the paper and cartridges. And i always have my syllabi bound! Just easy to take along with you. if you get a student ID you can print and ding them at Office Depot for pretty cheap! Hmm, what other words of wisdom? Oh, don't get the nursing clip boards. Go to Wal Mart and get the clip boards that open up. You will carry a lot of papers with you to clinicals, so they are nice to stash your stuff and not worry about HIPPA! Smart phones or iPod touches are nice because you can put a drug book on there, common lab values, stuff like that, so you don't have to bring the books to clinical! Just check with your teacher if they are ok to use. I haven't had an issue yet. A little thing I do as well is, instead of stuffing my pockets with big sheets of paper, I just take a few 3x5 cards and use a small binder clip for them. They fit well in your pocket and you can take notes on them. Buy lots of those book tabs too, the packs with the different colors. I use 1 color per test in my books. Makes it easier to find what you need in the book! And don't be afraid of the upper classmen! We are almost always willing to share things! I think that's about it. if I think of anything I'll let you know!

Thank you :) I really appreciate it. I'm just going to go to the orientation classes and hope for the best, but worst case scenario I start in the Fall (I'll have at least 29 points for next time). I was 6th or 7th on the list... so I'm hoping at least 8 people don't accept hahaha.

I see im not the only person freaking out... But I do really well staying calm and positive in most situations , I personally think we are all gonna do very well in the program ... Its all exciting that we made it so its only natural for us to all be on edge ... So I will just take it one day at a time. It would be such a great thing for us to get a group goin after 1st orientation , we can all be of great help to each other..::-))

Just an FYI about the immunizations for those of you in the same boat as me with no insurance...i called the clark county health department and the pricing for each is as follows Hep B $45 per shot 3 needed, MMR $75 per shot 2 needed, Chickenpox $105 per shot 2 needed, TDAP $60...so if you are in need of all the shots through the health district it will be $555...I am trying to get the records from my childhood doctors because the MMR I got will still be good and if you have official documentation stating you had the chicken pox you do not need the chickenpox vaccine...TDAP I had as a child but it is only good for 10 years so if you have your records showing you've had that in the past ten years you will be ok on that one as well...If anyone knows of a cheaper alternative please let me know

I suggest finding insurance first that is reasonably priced and will cover immunizations. That would be way cheaper, even if you had copay.

Wonder how much a titer would be...I am in my forties and had chicken pox as a kid but we didn't go to doctors!!! LOL....I have the big round scar from the small pox vaccine! I called the health department and they said the hep b was 70.00 a shot. I wonder what happened with that. I asked when I picked up my packet and the lady said to wait until orientation to do immunizations. I wonder if they will offer them at the school. I do have insurance but I need to check and see if it even covers immunizations.

I had titers done at Labcorp (ordered by my primary MD) and they billed my insurance over $1500!! But my insurance wrote off most of it and I only paid about $75. I would NOT recommend them unless you're sure that your insurance will cover/write off most of it. I have heard that The Vaccine Center is less expensive for both vaccines and titers.

Thanks so much for all of the info! I actually just bought a Samsung laser printer from Fry's for $40! I have an inkjet printer that is very slow and the ink is expensive and needs to be replaced every 100 pages or so. I think the laser printer will just be less of a headache.

Can you recommend a good stethoscope? I have a hard time hearing some things (all those years of going to concerts as a kid is coming back to haunt me!) and I also don't want to spend $150+ on the littman cardiology one that tons of people recommend!

I kinda wish that you were on our class so you would be around to help us longer :D

I agree, from the looks of it the vaccine center may be our best bet and they give students discounts from what i seen
