CRNE preparation advices needed

Hello,everyone.I'm a international trained nurse and my registration process in Alberta is in progress. I'm planning to take CRNE this OCT.

According to whatever you discussed regarding of CRNE, I feel a bit scared. Is it really difficult? How can I start to prepare for it? Is the CRNE pre-guide useful? Any preparation workshop availabe in Edmonton? Is it worth to take it? Any other books which I can find in public libary?

I studied for the CRNE using the competances noted in the CRNE Guide. The competances that I needed to work on is the areas I concentrated on. I found the exam like a mental workout. Time went to fast. But overall, I guess its what you have retained and what you know from Nursing School.

No, you can't work as an RN without passing the CRNE. You can work as a graduate nurse though. Once you've passed and the documentation has been processed and you actually have your registration in your hot little hand, the employer will pay you retroactively to whatever date was agreed on when you were hired. For some it's the date you wrote the exam, for others who were a little more savvy and had it made a condition of acceptance, it would be the date of hire.

But, if you take the exam and do not pass it, then you cannot work as a graduate nurse either. Correct? Think that was what the question was. Should be just like the US, if you take the exam, then the temporary permit essentially expires, you either pass it and hold the title of RN, or you have to work in another role entirely, but not in the role of even graduate nurse at this point.

Graduate nurse is usually just a temporary title until they have written the licensing exam. Once written, that title goes away.

You're right, Suzanne. Any already-registered-somewhere-else RN who wishes to work as an RN in Canada will have to work first as a GN until they've taken and passed the CRNE. If one fails they can no longer perform work that would be the purview of an RN or GN until they have passed the CRNE. And it's really too bad that the Canadian Nurses Association can't get its act together and get the results out to people in time for them to register for the next sitting should they fail. So much time is lost and so many people are hurt by it, but it's like trying to turn the Titanic around to get them to join the 21st century!

I failed two times the CRNE exam. I tried to find more books /questions practice on web and I was very surprised how many guidelines are for NCLEX compare with CRNE exam. I am struggle with psycho-social questions. Any advice will be welcome.

PS. I found an interested preparation site and it seems to be OK.

When I study for nursing tests I take each problem picture myself in a senario with the nursing diagnosis planning and intervention. This visualization helps me more than anything. Take a testing parameter and visualize a senario for it. I do that and then familiarize myself with the medical conditions. In reality you can't know everything. Another thing I do is do several medical math problems a day. Those are easy right answers on the test.

I am currently awaiting my SRNA(saskatchewan registered nurse assoc.)grad. nurse license and I hope to sit the CRNE next year february or June 2009. The reason is, I wanted to prepare better for the exam since I have read its way different from NCLEX/CGFNS type that Philippine nurses are being prepped for since students. My employers, Sunrise Health Region, came here in our country last March 2008, along with a representative from SRNA. They gave out this brochure from SIAST(Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology) wherein we could take "Orientation to Nursing in Canada for Internationally Educated Nurses" a program to help International nurses like me with the transition as well as getting ready for the CRNE exam. Since I have read that it only takes 3 shots, I decided I won't take the risk and enroll once I am there. I do hope I can juggle both studying and working. If there is someone out there who is taking this course or planning to, please share your experience,comments,thoughts about this. I will be sending SIAST an email in a little while to ask for further info's...godbless and goodluck to those who will take the CRNE

No, you can't. You would never get a work permit to come over here and work without a license for any great length of time especially if you have no intention of writing the CRNE and becoming registered. There is no shortage of unlicensed personnel and the importation of health care providers from other countries is intended to provide registered nurses to fill the gaps while our education programs get caught up. It's all or nothing.

If you get a temp work permit you will find that you have to sit the exam within a certain period of time and pass the exam. As Jan states there is no shortage of unlicensed personnel and Canada is looking for the most part on skilled workers
