Hi everyone, Im an Irish nurse preparing for the CRNEs for February 2012 in Toronto. Didnt see any thread for this exam in February, so thought id start one. How is everyone preparing? Im using the CRNE prep guide doing Qs and studying the competencies. Any tips/advice? Happy studying!!
When I studied last year, I used the CNA guide, Mosbys, various textbooks, and a maternal child text recommended in the reference list in the CNA guide. I also reviewed RNAO best practice guidelines, and some of the CNA web documents.
You need to cover all your bases. Aside from test anxiety, the issue for many people seems to be a lack of knowledge. If you don't have the knowledge, you can't succeed with the knowledge based questions, or the application questions on the CRNE. More importantly, cramming over a month or two won't ensure success. I made a plan and a schedule, and I kept that schedule for 6 weeks prior to the exam.
People keep asking how to succeed. If all else fails, remember your ABCs, the nursing process, ethics, and therapeutic communication.
Good luck.
Thanks janfrnI am so depressed, I did not rewrite again in Oct, since I have only one chance, don't want to fail again.
On the letter sent by the CNO usually tells you how you did for each main competencies for those people who did not do well. I suggest that you take a look at both of the previous letters from CNO and see which competency you did not do well on and concentrate on those areas. Overall when answering CRNE prep questions, you should be asking yourself "What's wrong with this patient?" and then pick an answer. Then look up the answer at the back and try to relate it back to the question. It's not all about just knowing the answer but trying to relate the answer back to the question.
My friend and I both took a prep course with Toronto School of Nursing, but both of us failed.I missed by 12 points. Now we don't know what to do. We used 2 review books, practice many questions.
I only have one chance left. Feel very helpless. I applied for rescoring my exam but CNO only mailed me another letter after few weeks showing "Fail". There were no other details. I don't know what went wrong. don't know what to do next.
Preparation course like the Toronto School of Nursing guides you what to do to help you pass but it's you who will take the exam. I am planning to take their course because I failed my second attempt but with your comment, I might look the other preparation course. I got (103/114) but that was my self review, if I had somebody to coach or tutor me probably it would be much better.

That was probably a wise decision. It'll give you more time to figure out what you need to fix so that you'll pass on your final attempt. Do some thinking about those factors I mentioned above. You can't solve a problem until you know what it is. Use the nursing process! Assess. Diagnose. Plan. Implement. The College of Nurses will evaluate. But please don't continue to do the same thing while expecting different results.
