CRNA Questions

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

Hi---

I'm new here and am looking into finding out more about the CRNA profession. I am Neonatal ICU RN with 4 years of experience.

***Does Neonatal ICU experience meet the ICU requirements of most programs?

***Are CRNA students able to work part-time while in the program?

***What is the job outlook like for CRNAs?

Not 100% sure, but I think all CRNA programs require the GRE not the MAT.

Not all....TCU will accept the MAT or GRE. I took the GRE and did ok but did really, really well on the MAT so that is what I submitted there.

Thanks for the feedback. Actually, the CRNA program I will apply to accepts both GRE and MAT. So I just made a decision and bought the MAT study book and am going to see what happens.

Can anyone give insight to my next question which is, are there any part-time gigs out there for a CRNA's?

have you googled CRNA jobs? I didn't see any that specifically said part time but judging by the sheer number of jobs listed I bet you'll be able to find part time work if you want it.

UAB takes either or and Erlanger in Chattanooga takes just the MAT. I took the MAT. My mind was just geared towards the way it was testing and I knew I could do well on it. I did, I'm in ;) I recommend the MAT. Downside is, many places DO want a GRE score instead.

ERush, are you applying at UAB? Just curious. I applied for the '08 class but haven't heard anything yet.

Can anyone give insight to my next question which is, are there any part-time gigs out there for a CRNA's?

Have you looked on www.gasworks.com? It's a great resource.

Fronkey Bean,

To answer for EndRush (hope he won't mind, but we have a pharm test on Monday so he may not pop on here too much over the weekend) he is in the '07 class at UAB along with myself. I have not heard anything about how they will send out letters/do interviews this year. Our deadline last year was 10/1 and I think most of us heard whether or not we had been accepted for an interview by the end of Oct/early Nov. Interviews were held mid-November and we knew by Thanksgiving if we were in. Interviews at UAB are VERY low stress--I think they mainly want to know if your personality will fit in with the program. I did not interview anywhere else as UAB was my first choice and I heard back from them first. I know EndRush interviewed at Ehrlanger (sp?) and said it was a much different experience (and I don't mean in a good way...). Good luck to you! It is a lot of work (we are not even 1/2 way through the first semester and it seems like we have been here a year) but it is workable. I am a single mom with a 4 year old and no family in the area and so far I have managed to do just fine:)

Hello All,

I have an interview at Wesleyan Jan 08. I need all the tips and support I can get. What to expect how to prepare etc.. Thanks RN from Texas (Texas a whole other World)

I have been looking at 3 different programs. I don't know about NICU, but I do know that they don't accept PICU experience (and I really think they don't accept NICU either). They were looking for adult ICU experience, and it is my understanding that cardiac ICU is particularly impressive to admission committee. So, if 2 candidates were equally qualified, CVICU may weight heavier than MICU. Those are just the things I have heard through the grapevine, or have researched for myself.

I would recommend looking at the admission requirements for the programs you are interested in. I have found it to be fairly simple to find what they consider to be acceptable ICU experience. You could also call the school as well, and I'm sure they would be able to answer you for sure.

Good luck to you,

Jen

Thanks, I appreciate the time table. I know all my forms, etc. were received, so I'm just waitng to hear about an interview. Good luck w/ your studies.

The secretary at UAB told me that they are not rushing things this year like they did last year b/c of competition with Samford. Samford has made semester changes and UAB is NOT going to try to compete this time. She told me letters would probably not go out until Dec, with interviews not until Feb/March for the Montgomery component. Hope this helps.
