  1. Hi! I will be starting new job with an internal medicine office this week, and I'm very excited about it! What are must-have reference books? I currently have Epocrates on my iPhone. Thanks!
  2. I'm only an ANP, no other specialties. When he mentioned that, red flags went up. I'm still on orientation and have not seen any patients on my own. Is there anything in writing I could refer to? I'm going to be resigning from the position.
  3. I just started my first NP job last week at an allergy/asthma office. From conversation and the interview, I was under the impression I would be caring for adults, or at least adolescents. Well, the physician is expecting me to care for children of all ages. While he says he'll sign off on all of my charts, there will definitely be times when I'm on my own and he's out of the office. No part of that sounds right to me. I'm going to call my state's (Indiana) board of nursing tomorrow. What ages are ANPs allowed to care for in practice? Where did you find this info?
  4. True; however, earlier in my search I was turned down because of lack of experience, so I never really had a chance to see what was out there. I jumped on and accepted my first job offer. I have nothing to lose since I'm already hired, so I figured I'd interview to see what they have to offer and if it would work out better for me. While I'm very interested in allergy/asthma, internal medicine would give me more experience as a new grad.
  5. $35/hr for new grad in a private practice in central Indiana.
  6. I am a new ANP grad, and I just accepted an offer for a NP position. I start in about 2 1/2 weeks. While I'm excited about the position and practice I'll be working, I'm not as excited about the benefits since it is a smaller, private practice. The day I accepted the offer, I was also offered an interview with a hospital system working in an Internal Medicine practice. I accepted, and my interview is next week. This position is closer to home, higher pay, and better benefits. I know I'm not even guaranteed this position, but I figure I'd regret it if I didn't interview. Would you have done the same thing even though you've accepted a position?
  7. Family NP. I already have MSN for Adult NP.
  8. Most post-master's NP certificates require you to have completed a master's-level NP program first. I completed my NP (adult) program through Ball State. All of it was online, and it worked out well with my schedule since I work and have a family. The only downfall was finding clinical sites, since I was competing with other NP programs, as well as with residents and PAs.
  9. Has anyone heard anything about this program? I'm a recent ANP grad looking to do a FNP post-master's certificate.
  10. I had great support from my husband (helping w/care of our 2yo, housework, sometimes cooking, etc). I worked part-time (night shift) and went to school kind of an in-between part-time and full-time. I usually took 2 courses, unless it was a clinical. For clinicals, I did one at a time since it required 90-240 clinical hours. I did most of my school work at work (when we weren't busy), during our son's naps and after he went to bed, etc. The last two semesters were harder since I had more clinical hours on top of working, but I made it through, and it was worth it :) Good luck!
  11. My recruiter notified me of a NP hospitalist position that has opened, and it would be working 7 on/7 off from 1900-0700. Does anyone work this schedule? Is it typical?
  12. Long story short, I work in the NICU as a RN. I started off in the FNP program but switched during my last semester to ANP. While I love the neonatal patients, I also enjoy the adults. While I love kids in general, I had no interest in the pediatric portion of the program. Now as I'm job-searching, I'm being turned down because of lack of experience, not sure if it's my NICU-only experience or being a new grad. It's very discouraging. There is a need for NNPs here where I live, and there seem to be more options for FNPs. I'm kicking myself for not sticking with FNP (an extra 2 semesters) and not initially pursuing NNP.
  13. Well, I did the reverse...I'm a NICU nurse and just completed ANP program. Now, I'm thinking I want to go back for NNP, especially since the job market for ANPs (new grads, specifically) is horrible. If you're interested in NNP, you'll need at least 2 years of NICU experience to take boards for NNP (and most likely to get accepted into NNP program). You can job shadow a NICU nurse to see if that's for you before you accept a RN position or even apply.
  14. I recently graduated from the Adult NP program, and I've been unsuccessful in my job search. Most of the jobs require experience which is so frustrating as a new grad. I live in a bigger city, and we're not able to relocate because of my husband's job. Since I'm still working as a RN in the hospital, I keep wondering if I should pursue post-Master's certificate in Family NP or Neonatal NP (I have NICU experience) to make myself more marketable. Thoughts?
  15. If you are 100% sure you want to work in women's health, and you have no other interest, I'd go with WHNP. If you want to keep your options open (if the job market for WHNPs is like my area---slim to none) and be more marketable, I'd go for FNP.
