What kind of background checks do employers of nurses do? I mean I know we've always been told they check your background - and anything that's old -older than 10 years they ignore, and all that. But what about credit checks?
I mean obviously if you've been in school without medical insurance or something you might have unpaid medical bills - lots of students do. Do they look at that when considering whether to hire you?
A friend of mine says she wasn't hired because she thinks they saw that she owed them money. I thought about it and wondered whether the hiring department would even have access to that info -except for when they do your background check - but then again - if you owe money -that would be why you are looking for work - so it would be kind of unfair if they were allowed to not hire on that basis....lol -
I got a question regarding credits and debts, I worked in Belgium for 5 yrs. as a nurse and started getting a car loan. I moved to US in 2016 because my immigrant visa was approved so to cut the story short I left an unpaid car loan and some small amount of unpaid credit card. Now, I am applying for a Job and waiting for a background check. Would my unpaid loan appear in my background check? Any information will be helpful coz I already gave 2 weeks notice in my current employer. I am very worried right now. I have no intention to evade my obligation it's just that it is difficult to arrange payment while you are still in the transition process of starting your life here in the US.
I got a good credit report here in the US that I am sure of and I already signed the consent for them to check it. What concerns me is my unpaid loan in Belgium. My employer is conducting my background check internationally. Will they find it out? I mean I think it is not a crime but would it affect my application soon?
No, they will not likely find out, unless the bank that loaned you the money for the car is located here in the US, you have a SS# and the debt is linked to that SS#.
However, skipping out on a debt is indeed a crime. If there is an international warrant for you then yes, they will find it, but I highly HIGHLY doubt that is the case here.
I think you are fine, but ultimately nobody knows for sure and you are going to have to wait and see.
My employer is using first advantage background check. Are they really thorough in their background checks? Any experience with that company for background checks? I am not concern them me checking my background here in the US coz I've got no delinquencies or any records. The only concern I have is the money I owed from the bank for car loan that I left in Belgium.

Well, do they have credit reporting agencies/bureaus in Belgium? There would most likely lie your answer. What do standard credit/background checks in Belgium consist of? Have you encountered this derogatory information during a background check in Belgium in the recent past? If not, you probably don't have to worry. For your own peace of mind in the future, you should consider settling the bad debt in Belgium.
Belgian bank don't do background checks for debtors. I left Belgium in 2016 to come to US. I still have balance left for my car loan. The bank emailed me once before to settle my balance but how am I going to pay it me here in the US. After that no more communication done even though they still have my email add. I am just worried now if that debt might appear in the background check that they are now conducting.

Belgian employers don't do background checks and Belgium does not have credit bureaus, etc.? Then stop worrying, nothing will show. If the information is not available to Belgian employers, credit grantors, etc., then there will be no information available to any US credit/background checking agency. But I don't understand why you don't want to pay the debt. You are aware that in some states in the US, failure to pay certain debts can affect one's license? My state will take action against nursing licenses of those who fail to pay their state taxes. A word to the wise.
Would this link help with what you mean to say? https://finance.yahoo.com/news/belgium-deals-credit-without-equifax-experian-transunion-114323975.html I got a very good credit report here in the US. The circumstance that I have before was unplanned and I am willing to settle that.

Credit checks and background screening only happen after the employer makes the prospective employee a solid offer of employment. Credit reports and background screening are expensive, so HR only spends this money on people who have received firm offers of employment.
If your friend was not hired due to derogatory findings on the credit report, the employer would have had a legal obligation to notify her that her credit was the reason the offer was rescinded, and the credit reporting bureau would have had a legal obligation to provide your friend with a copy of the credit report upon request.
People with crappy credit histories are hired all the time. Your friend is leaving an important part of the story out and/or telling a narrative that fits her worldview.
