Coworker going to turn down "diamond" job because of training location...seriously?

Published

M-F, no weekends/no holidays/no call, full benefits from day 1, salary about 74K a yr, but my coworker is most likely not going to take this position because the orienation is at the "mother" hospital about 3 hrs away..he would have to be there a week and 1/2..the employer IS going to reimburse him for his mileage AND hotel...but he does not like having to travel - even for this short period of time nor having to pay the travel expenses up front. These are the ONLY reasons he is not going to take this position...I understand being anxious about being away from home, family but he will come home over the weekend and this is most likely the only time he will have to go out of his area. Am I missing something or can it be people really hate traveling this much as to pass up this opportunity - especially in these economic times.............

The company should front the money for him to rule out the money issue.

Specializes in geriatrics.

Really, the reasons why your coworker isn't accepting the job are his. He doesn't need public approval.

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

Who knows why he's really passing it up? And does it matter? It's his decision--no one else's.

That being said, since he's turning it down and you seem to be interested in it...why not ask him to drop your name to the manager?

Specializes in medical surgical.

He may not have the money for gas, hotel and food and does not want to disclose that. I am guessing it could cost him a thousand dollars to front that money. In these economic times that can be difficult to do. I would not pester him about this.

Specializes in ORTHOPAEDICS-CERTIFIED SINCE 89.

His reasons are his own. He may be fronting acceptable (to others) causes after being pressured to give some.

Not to cause offence or be rude, but:

Happiness is rather a subjective thing. What floats your boat may do nothing for your co-worker. Maybe he knows allot more about the facility and or the position than letting on thus considers himself good where he is.

Whatever the man's reasons are, they are his and aside from perhaps his spouse and or family no one else really needs to be involved or consulted on the decision. As Mammy once told Scarlett "... yes, but he's her husband ain't he?

I wouldn't take the job either. That would be a good excuse why not to accept the job. I will have to remember that excuse if I ever need one!

Thanks for the replies...it didn't occur to me, because of how he is, there would be a reason other than what he stated as he seems like a very direct person and really seems to dislike his position now..well, thanks again for the opinons..once again I learn to expand my thinking of this board!
