Coursera Classes

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

A few weeks ago someone had posted on here about coursera. I looked into it and signed up for a couple of courses and I must say I absolutely loved it!! I am taking a neurobiology course through The University of Chicago right now and it has been great.

First off, it is free!! You will not receive college credit for it but the vast wealth of information on this site is awesome. It is an actual college course. If you want a verified certificate of completion for the class you have to sign up and pay $49, but if you are like me and just want the knowledge it is absolutely free.

I have just wrapped up my third week of neurobiology and I have learned so much about the brain and how it develops and works. If anyone has any interest in just some extra learning this is a great site.

I start a vital signs course tomorrow and am looking forward to it. Now my inner nerd has officially come out. Yes, I like to learn on my own. :cheeky:

I agree! I'll see you in the vital signs course, the more I learn the better nurse I will be. Thats the goal right? I have links to all kinds of free courses and schools, just takes some searching.

Good day, Heathermaizey:

I posted about the vital sign class a short while back; I'm also taking it.

These are the ones I'm signed up for at present:

https://www.coursera.org/course/vitalsigns

https://www.coursera.org/course/healthcaresafety

https://www.coursera.org/course/clinicalterminology

They have a number of other ones I'm interested in running this year; I'm just not sure of taking them given my course loads (9 to 12 credits over the summer; I'm still deciding whether to run 9 or 12. 13 credits in the fall).

Thank you.

P.S. I tried the $49 option last year. The pain is that you have to spend 2 to 3 minutes verifying who you are for every quiz, exam, homework assignment. It gets to be a pain because they don't have a quick way to verify you are you.

That sounds great. I am trying Khan Academy but not sure how that compares with Coursera since I've never taken it. :)

Good day:

Also, if your library is associated with universalclass.com, you can take up to five (5) free classes at a time. Unlike Coursera, these are 100% self-paced vs. having start, end, and due dates.

Thank you.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing! I wish they had language courses!

There's also edX! I've taken some courses from Harvard and MIT and they're hard but really fun.

I am also in the vital sign course and just signed up for the terminology one yesterday. I had never realized that these type of classes existed and I thought after pmabraham had posted about it I would try it. I am so enjoying this class. Never thought I would get into stuff like this but we went over this week how the neural tube is formed in fetal development and we are getting much more in depth on the anatomy and physiology than we did at my school. The professor is great and is doing human brain dissections on the webcam so we can see everything. I am just really glad I did this. Thanks pmabraham!!

You are very welcome, Heathermaizey. I almost signed up for the neuro one, but this past semester was extremely tough -- ap2, life span development, microbiology, nutritional science... I didn't think I could put in the required time for the neuro class on coursera and keep up with the other classes.

I'm also taking the vital signs. I never heard of it either, until I saw it posted on here. Thanks!....I'm looking forward to it. Every bit helps in my learning. Good luck to everyone!!
