Corrective Action or Bullying???

Nurses Professionalism

Published

I have been in this dept for less than a year. Almost from the beginning, I have felt that I was not a good fit for the department. I love the nursing, but I am not a good fit. company policy requires specific 'time served' in a position before you can transfer (unless the management allows it). My unit management does not allow it.

As I have not been a nurse for long, I am always very upfront when I have questions regarding procedures or medications that I am unfamiliar with. From the beginning, when I asked questions I was frequently blown off or belittled. Overtime, I have had fewer questions, but still get rude responses when I do ask. This is the environment that I work in. This is not just one person being mean, but several managers.

About two months ago, I was called into the managers office about a blood transfusion I had administered. Long story short, 2 IVs, one for blood only, the other for ordered maintenance fluid and med drip. Pt was dehydrated, monitored regularly for fluid overload, good outcome. Management was upset that I ran the secondary line. I looked for company policy indicating that this was not acceptable, none found. I checked several other sources, including the unit educator, no indication that I had screwed up, except for in managements eyes. During this discussion, I was talked to about my time management skills.

Fast forward two months, been working on time management. I was running late one day and gave report later than I should have, I understand that this is inconvenient for the oncoming nurses. It had not happened before and I apologized.

Next thing I know I am being written up for time management, as well as patient safety and satisfaction issues! Other than the late report, I did make an error. It was not a medication error, the patient was completely alert and oriented and unharmed. However, it was a mistake and I admit that.

Included in the write up is a complaint about an issue that I was in no way involved in. I explained that to the manager, at the time I was unable to prove what I was saying because I did not have access to the pt file. Later I was able to prove to another manager that I was not involved.

The issues have been ongoing, from raised voices in front of other employees, to kicking the back of my chair when I attempted to respond to question in a meeting.

I don't want to leave the company. I do want to leave the department, and now a possible transfer is even further away than before.

Suggestions? Comments? Criticisms? I'll take anything at this point.

Honestly? It seems they have decided they do not like you. Petty, dishonest, unprofessional. Find a new job. Cut your losses.

Just had the same thing happen: I got called in to the managers office and 'written up". The whole write up was total fiction. I proved that by going through the charting. Their response was that I either sign the "corrective action" or take involuntary termination. They informed me that with that involuntary termination, the board of nursing would take my license away and I would have to pay for an attorney to fight for the license. So I signed. Then they said that I could now take 2 weeks off as voluntary resignation. I have no idea why they did this. Really no idea. One of the other nurses on the floor told me that this was not the first time that the managerment had done this, which made me feel slightly better.

I tried to get other jobs, but they "faxed over" the signed write up to their "aquaintences" in other companies.

I did manage to get another position, but will not update my information on line or let anyone know where it is for fear of continued harrassment from my old company.

I know what you are all thinking, I must really be a horrible person and in denial, but I really can not think of a single thing that I did other than not be personally liked by the management favorite.

Frodo-dog,

Under no circumstances do I think you are a horrible person or in denial. I worked in the business world for many years before becoming a nurse, I know that once management decides that they do not like you, or that you are not a good fit, it is very hard, if not impossible to change minds.

I truly do not know what I did to inspire such disdain (well, until recently). In a recent incident, I finally stopped rolling over and confronted a manager, privately, about inappropriately hostile behavior. I believe that this contributed significantly to the situation I am currently in.

I do not want to leave this company. They have invested so much in my education. I am sad that I have to go somewhere and start over, but my psyche cannot continue tolerate this behavior.

Although I do have an appointment with HR, I am realistic in the knowledge that the main interest of HR is in protecting the company. I guess, I just want to make sure the next person in line (and I do believe that there will be a next person) has some kind of documented evidence of previous unacceptable behavior by this management.

Again, thank you to one and all. I have gained insight from each post and I have learned that we are not all against each other.

Thank you for that.

Blessed Be

To all looking for a job outside of a toxic work environment. Please give thought to jails and or correctional facilities. I've been a nurse 38 yrs. I now work part time in the psych mental health field and make more money per hour than I did in hospital nursing. I get more per hour for psych certification than for having the BSN, but the work is rewarding and satisfying. The nurses are well protected by the correctional officers, and the inmates ( patients) appreciate the work we do. I happen to work in NJ at a state run correctional facility, not a state worker employed by the DOC, but a contracted worker employed by Rutgers University. All the prisons in NJ are looking for nurses and you can work in the medical compound, or if you have psych experience, you can specialize in this field. The need is great, no families to interfere with your nursing experience, and you are protected by DOC officers. Give it a try .

Good for you. We shouldn't tolerate this behavior in our peers, managers, or supervisors. You handled it correctly. I've been around to witness in my 38 yrs. of nursing that " whatever goes around, comes around" more importantly, as per Eleanor Roosevelt: No one can make you feel inferior, without your consent. I wish you the best, more nurses need to follow your example. There are a lot of unhealthy personalities in nursing. I wish you all the best!

I would discuss with HR or a union rep if it is a union hospital. I would start looking for another position in another facility. There is a reason that they are confident enough to kick your chair, they are able to get away with this. It does not sound as though they want to make you feel at home in their unit or allow you to work in a different unit. This is a poor environment to work in. Also, you need to understand if there is any error made concerning a patient it is part of your permanent record and your own state board that issued your license has ready access to this. Another note for you is try to wind up everything you need to do to get through report at shift change. You can give report and catch up after the next nurse starts. You will get more efficient. I can tell you that managers and coworkers are not very understanding once you are off of orientation. So sorry about these things. Hang in there. I urge you to shop around at other facilities!

Our psych nurses at our facility are fabulous, caring people. I am lucky enough to float into their unit if they are short handed. They in turn come to the ICU to help me in a jam with a patient that is not quite medically stable enough to transfer out to them yet. They help me to understand what fears and problems my patient is experiencing in addition to being medically critically ill.

Look up Workplace Bullying Institute and they can help you further! My best to you as this crap needs to GO AWAY...

Not thinking that at all! I am thinking I am so sorry, it sounds like you were royally screwed for the horrible crime of not being in the popular group.
