Considering a career as a RN

Hello, I'ma bout to begin my first year of college and I am considering a career as an RN, I just have a few questions I'd like to ask..

1) Is it normal for a male to pursue a career as an RN? All the websites about nurses only have pictures of female nurses.. it makes it seem like this career is only for women?

2) Does every RN have to deal with "poop" at least once? I'd love to avoid cleaning up "poop" as much as possible

3) If you are an RN and had the chance to go back in time and pick a different career, would you?

Thanks.. I'll post more questions if I can think of them :chuckle

1. Many men are in the nursing profession. Browse the male nusring

forum. Lots of great male nurses hang out there!

2. Read the entire thread on poo. It will enlighten you on the subject!

You won't avoid it.

3. This is my second career...and I am so glad I chose to do this!

There is a ton of great info on AN. Do a search here on almost anything you are needing to know about nursing, and you will find it.

1. Speaking as a newly minted RN...yes, it's perfectly normal. We are a minority, but I like to believe we are appreciated.

2. After a while, you become desensitized to it....and learn how to deal. Also, when it's really bad, I've learned to just picture myself someplace else....Hoth comes to mind.

3. Nope...been there, done that...dead-end jobs, or a job that pays enough to survive in today's economy....yeah, pick away. Welcome to an.com and from one male nurse..give it a shot.

I know several male nurses, I say go for it

Yes you will deal with 'poop' but you learn to deal with, I dont even bat an eye at it anymore, actually I have more a problem with oral secretions....

Hind sight is always 20/20 Im not sure what I would do if I could do it all over again, but I do love nursing even with the challenges it comes with

I have found it to be very HARD WORK! Nurses aren't paid enough for what they do and that is still an understatement!!

1)Completely normal, and not a career only for women

2) Yep we all have to deal with poop. Don't worry, you'll get over the "ick" factor. (And believe me, I really, really didn't want to deal with poop when I first started out.) I'm not a huge fan even now, but you know, everyone poops, and no one is pleased about having someone else deal with wiping their butt or cleaning up after them like that. So I look at it as an opportunity to help someone maintain a sense of dignity.

3)No way!

1. I'm a guy, although not normal.

2. You will always be involved with poop - either actual poop, or bullsh**.

3. I wouldn't do anything else.
