Connecticut Community Colleges - Applying for 2014

U.S.A. Connecticut

Published

I've read through last year's version of this thread 100 times, so I thought I'd start a new one. I'm planning to apply for NCC's 2014 program. I'm taking A&P I right now (A- midterm grade, hoping to make that an A!) and will need to do the software applications class online in the winter session, so I won't be able to submit my app until final grades are out for that. Hopefully I won't be cutting it too close to the Feb 1st deadline! I'm taking my TEAS on November 18th.

Who else is applying? Where are you in the application process? Post your TEAS scores and GPA stats if you know them! My nursing GPA will be almost a 3.8 with an A- in A&P and an A in CSA105, but I dropped out two semesters in a row in 2006 (one semester medically excused but still on my transcript, the other no excuse, just screwed up being 19 and not very serious about my education at that time) I hope those hiccups won't count against me too much, luckily none of the classes I was taking at the time applied to the nursing program.

It was really good. At least I know how much I need to study. I had underestimated it. And now I won't make the same clinical mistakes again.

That's good, I'm sure it's difficult when you don't know what to expect. What was the schedule like? How many days did you do clinicals and where? Can you walk us through a typical clinical day? Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions, just really curious since I haven't seen many details on what the program is actually like :)

Officially got my A&P grade from my professor. I held on to my A- and I suppose I'm ok with it. I would have loved to get that A, but I think I'm still in good shape as long as my winter CSA105 class goes well.

I'm more irritated about it than I usually would be, because a lady in my study group got a 69 on the final exam and he gave her a B+ for the semester instead of the B she should have mathematically gotten. A guy in our group had the exact same average as her (83) and he received a B. Basically the prof "lent" her FOUR points on her total average. If I had gotten the same treatment I'd have an A! Obviously there's nothing I can do about it, but I had to vent about it here haha.

Maybe she came in for extra labs or tutoring sessions? Maybe she didn't miss any classes. Personally, what other people get isn't anyone else's business.

I had lecture on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8:30 to 10:30. Then I would have lab from 7:30 to 1:30on Thursdays and Fridays. In lab we learned different things about nursing and had validations (lab tests). We're validated on PPE, Vital signs, and Physical assessments at first. Then we went to a nursing home for 3 weeks where we basically did CNA work. I would have clinical from 6:45 to 1:00. Then we went back to lab. This time we were validated on giving an injection, spiking and priming an IV, and wound dressings.

I have clinical on Thursdays and Fridays. I was at the Nathaniel Witherral Nursing Home in Greenwich and then Norwalk Hospital.

The night before clinical, my instructor would email us our patient assignment, their room number, their medical diagnosis, their medical history, their medications, and their medical record number. Then the next day at the hospital, we would get report on the phone about our patient. We would get their vitals and then record them on the charting system. Then we would do our physical assessments and chart whatever we found. The patients would have breakfast and get washed up if they wanted to. Or if they're a total care, you would have to do a bed bath. If my instructor assigned us to do a med pass, then we would also be giving our patient their medication as long as it wasn't an IV push. Then around 10:30, my instructor would call us individually to check our charting. Then we would do noon vitals and after have post conference where we talked about our patients and what we did.

I'm so worried now because my nursing GPA is slightly lower than it was last year.

I don't think having a good score on the Teas will assure us to get accepted. I know people with a Teas score of 59 and got in! I just retook A&P I and I got the A that I wanted, also finished Microbiology with an A as well,:cheeky: My Teas score is 69 but I'm retaking it in January. Let's see what happens. I was #22 on the waitlist last year and I'm just hoping for the best right now. I wish you all a Happy New Year and believe in yourselves!

It doesn't. 25% TEAS and 50% GPA. Obviously GPA matters more.

I don't think any one factor is enough to assure acceptance. Obviously GPA is most important, but you could have a great GPA with a very low TEAS score and a low A&P grade and still not get in. Then there's the lottery which gives even people with the bare minimum requirements a shot at acceptance, and those people will take 25% of the seats. A friend of a friend got into NCC with a 55 on the TEAS and a C+ in A&P. So you really never know. Personally I'm just aiming high in every area because I want to get in by rank and not by chance.

Does everyone have their apps in? I'm taking my CSA105 final tomorrow or Friday but I'm kind of anxious that my grade won't be final on my transcript in time for the deadline :/ NCC took TWO WEEKS to roll the fall semester grades because professor's didn't submit them in time. Hopefully the department will be understanding if something like that happens again. Did you guys deliver all of your documents (transcript, hs diploma) in person or send them by mail?

Everything has to be in by February 1. If everything has been taken at a Connecticut CC, it is in system, you do not need to send. If you have taken any classes elsewhere, you should have had those things sent long before now. All of this information is in the nursing admission packet, and your nursing advisor can answer as well. They are very helpful here at TRCC.

I didn't know that about the CC community colleges, must have missed it in the packet. Anyway, I applied online last week and everything is showing up as "met" except my computer course and A&P 2 which I'm taking in the spring. Now the wait begins!

This thread is so so quiet compared to last year! How is everyone dealing with the stress? Good luck :)
