confused new student

Published

Hi,

I just started essex county college in new jersey for nursing. I am 41 years old and a career changer. I have decided to change careers from banking to nursing. The comments posted are a little scary when it comes to new grads unable to find work. I wondering if I just wasting my time and efforts. I'm not even sure if I can grasp the material as this age. Does anyone have any advice for me. I am at a crossroad in my life. I want to make a difference in other peoples lives. In my heart I think I have the umph, but in my mind I'm not so sure. Please help:sniff:

Haven't posted anything in awhile. Still don't know how to get around the forum. I have a few questions- how do you send a message to someone on your friend list. I have to open an old posts to send this one, I don't think that the way to go. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Next question- I am scheduled to take the NLN exam for Essex County College LPN program. Has anyone gone through this program. Would you recommend the program. Also, I am scheduled to take New Community Workforce LPN entrance exam. Not sure what is the better fit. Not sure how to even decipher what is better or not.

PhonixTech trying to reach you. Just don't know how. If you read this please respond so that we can get back in touch.

Hey Moe!

I sent you a message awhile ago and when you didn't answer I just assumed you were too busy. I think you have to post a certain amount of messages before you can send a private message. I don't know how many though. But once you hit the mark just look at the top of someone's profile page and click the tab that says, 'send ****** a private message'.

If it were me I'd go through Essex County College because you can transfer the credits from the additional LPN courses such as A&P, when you go for your RN. Whatever you choose, just make sure the program is accredited. It's nice to here from you. I was accepted to Essex's fall RN program! Just have to work out a few technicalities but I'm sure it'll work out.

Why in the world would you think you are too old to grasp the material? "Older" students notoriously do better than the younger ones. I am 51 and graduating in January. I have had all A's. Too old? No way! If you want it bad enough you will do it. If you're unsure don't bother because it's extremely challenging in more ways than one. Nursing school is hard on you and your family and all your relationships. it's hard on your self esteem dealing with instructors who are possibly younger than you and are not easy on you at all. As I said if you want it go for it,, but don't blame your age...

Very true. People my age (20) don't always take it seriously. But there are a lot that still do well. Most older people have said to me it takes a second to get the hang of being back in school, but you'll do great! :)

One of the best nurses I worked with came from banking. He is the one I always go to with my hard IVs and blood draws. I myself graduated from LPN schools at 42. I then went on to RN school while working nights full time and graduated at 47. Age is NOT an issue here.

It is just too hard to predict the future of nursing. Who knows if the economy will pick up and we just don't know the effect of the new health care plan. If it is truly something you want to to, then go for it. Education is never a waste. :)

To be able to send a pm you need 15 or more posts, once you meet that requirement the option appears on any pm's you have received and want to reply to. Alternatively you can go to the members profile or if you look at the member's post there is a small icon just under their name that looks like paper and pencil and when you hover your mouse over it it will say send ****** a private message

Specializes in cardiac-telemetry, hospice, ICU.

Moe, I am glad to hear you are on path. I am not trying to 'up' you or others when I say I am 58 years old and just accepted to a nursing program. This will be my 4th and final career! When I started my prereqs my learning curve was a bit rusty, but now I am often at the head of my classes. You are too old when you decide you are! Good luck on your journey!

I think it's fantastic that you are making a career change. So many out there are stuck in their positions and are not brave enough to conquer what they want to do. Good for you!

I've said this before. Many students get job offers before they even graduate. The ones posting here are just a small percentage of new nurses out there, so take that into consideration. Also, some people are too particular. They only want to work at a certain hospital, or on a certain floor, or in a particular field, like OB. I'm sure if you keep your options open, you won't be jobless.
