Confused on app to nursing schools!!!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Am I supposed to finish all my nursing pre-reqs before being able to apply to nursing schools? Even if the remaining of my classes will be finished the semester after my intended application date?

No, but they will offer placement contingent on completing those classes with satisfactory grande and may ask for in progress class transcripts etc.

Keep in mind that you will be competing with applicants who have completed all of their prerequisites. It's like any basic minimum - it's just the minimum. There will doubtless be many others who have far surpassed the minimum.

Some programs require they be completed before applying, others do not. Find out the policies at the programs you are interested in, and plan accordingly.

For the school I am applying to, the BSN hopefuls can have up to 2 prereqs in progress and must finish them while maintaining GPA within the semester of applying. For the MEPN hopefuls (this is me) have to have everything finished prior to applying. So you'll have to check the requirements of the program you are applying to.

The BSN program I applied to was max of 13 remaining units the semester prior to starting the program and only 1 of those classes (4) units, could be a lab science class.

Zotastic check the nursing handbook for the program of choice it varies from school to school. This is something you don't want to get twisted so if there is too much fuzziness check with your nursing schools advisor or general academic advisor.

For an example my university permits two unfinished major science pre-requisites prior to starting sophomore nursing classes and you are placed based off your gpa when you apply but you have to meet a cumulative 3.0 after your placed to stay in the program. Now my cc required all pre-requisites to be completed before applying and TEAS where my current university doesn't require TEAS.

My nursing program did not require all prerequisites to be finished by the time of application. I applied to the program with 45 out of 60 credits that needed to be completed which included two major science courses that still needed to be completed. I applied with a 4.0 so that helped boost my application as weel even though I was missing a lot of points. So, I was accepted on a provisional accepted that those classes must be completed by my start date.

Maybe your school's admission policy is as lenient as mine? Definitely talk to your schools office of admission or advisor to find out!

Like Fulfilled25 said, you should check with the individual schools that you plan on applying to as every school is different. For example, the school that I want to apply to accepts student based on their ranking against one another one using a points system. My school is fairly unique in the sense that they will invite a certain number of students to take the TEAS exam for free based off of the science GPA. Though nursing advisors say that students who have not completed all of their prerequisites and have one or two in progress can still apply, they also say that students who have completed all will be given priority. Students with courses in progress essentially get no points added for their work even if they were to submit the grade afterwards.

It is a wee bit of a bummer because I am one of those students with one class that will be in progress. This pushes my application date to the Spring semester and my start date to next Fall. I am not upset by this though because I know that nursing is competitive and the person responsible for reviewing the applications would have to go back and recalculate scores all over again. I personally think it is beneficial to get all of your prerequisites completed so you have a strong foundation to build on and you might be able to line up a tech or CNA job in order to get some exposure to the medical world.

Some will require that they should all be complete. Most, I believe just prefer but not require that they are. I've been told by recruiters to various programs that it is more appealing to the schools if the classes are complete. It shows the motivation towards the RN degree. I completed all of mine prior and I was accepted to both programs in which I applied. I had a 3.6 gpa and average teas scores. Best of luck!

what about specifically TWU's Houston Campus?
