Concordia College (NY) ABSN Fall 2010

Anyone applying to Concordia's program in Bronxville, NY for the fall? Haven't seen a thread for it yet!

Specializes in CSICU/CTICU.

Not going to Concordia but I'm from the area..don't stay in Manhattan, you should feel lucky that you have a reason NOT to pay such crazy rent.. I would look at Yonkers, Tuckahoe, Eastchester, White Plains.. If you want to be close to Manhattan and school, try Riverdale..Nicest part of the Bronx ...15 minutes from midtown, 15 mins from Bronxville via car, of course!

Congratulations! Just wanted to echo what others said above. Commuting to Bronxville via the Metro North from Manhattan will cost you 30-35 minutes, not including the time it will take to get to Grand Central. Clinical sites like Westchester Medical Center are further north, and not necessarily within easy distance from respective train stations. Unless you were planning on driving, which brings with it a lot of other hassles.

Riverdale truly is the best of both worlds. I lived there for four years during my undergrad and believe it to be one of the city's best kept secrets. You're able to drive, walk, and take public transport to pretty much anywhere you need, all the while in a beautiful, safe neighborhood. It is about a 10-15 minute drive to Concordia from Riverdale. No where near as busy or exciting as Manhattan though.

I am from Long Island..and I am nervous after reading all these different posts about the program at Concordia. I went to Bronxville for an interview and the campus was small and quiet. The lady who interviewed me was nice..and like what previous posts said..she was telling me more about the program. So in one sense, it was a "traditional" interview..more like a session where she was telling me additional information. I plan on attending Concordia this fall 2010. I wanted to know...what is the tuition like?? I know that there aren't scholarships available to 2nd degree students..but was wondering if any of you would know how much the tuition is? Since I'm from Long Island..the commute to Bronxville in the morning..might be a hassle. Are any of you from Long Island? Are any of you planning on dorming or getting an apartment?? Also..I just found out the program just got accreditation November 2009...and this would be the 3rd cohort coming in. So the 1st cohort graduated when the program was not accreditated?

Tuition is 25K a year.

Total tuition for the program is 37,800. Four semesters at 9,450. Also 2000 or so in nursing lab fees, according to: Concordia College-New York | Financing Your Education - Adult Education

As far as I can tell, the first cohort attended an accredited program. The accreditation is dated at November 2009, before the first class finished in December. The curriculum that was observed and approved by the CCNE was that which the first cohort attended. That is how I understand it, anyhow.

I understand your concerns about the commute. How far out on the island will you be coming from? I'll be coming from Queens, and while I am not terribly far from any of the three bridges, I know traffic might be a bit daunting. Personally I plan on playing it by ear for the first couple of months. If I feel that I would benefit from living closer to the school I might pursue something in the Westchester area after feeling it out. Perhaps you could inquire about dorming options at the orientation coming up in June? You can always give commuting a try, and if living somewhere closer to campus is an option, pursue that soon after starting. Since leases are typically 12 months delaying the beginning of one would mean your lease wouldnt end before the program finishes. If you do want to reside on campus, though, I imagine there are deadlines and space reservations to meet sooner than later. Hopefully someone else might know more about that.

All concerns aside, I am sure it will be worthwhile! :) Congratulations!

I just called financial aid..and they said that the total tuition is $38,800 for 15 months. It costs $216 to park. I inquired about dorms and it costs about $638 per month ($9,570 total). They said the lab fees would be around $1000 or so.

I am coming from the Queens/Nassau area...my main concern would be the traffic and then also paying the tolls on the bridges. I went to Concordia during non peak traffic hour for a visit..and it only took me 20-30 minutes to get there. But imagine, during rush hour..how much time we would waste sitting in traffic when we will have massive amounts of studying to do.

Thanks for clarifying the accreditation situation.

Anyone decide against going to concordia? got accepted elsewhere?

Jessicanyc,

I got accepted into the College of New Rochelle's nursing program but decided against it because they were slow in mailing out decision letters and providing information to make an informed decision. I could go to Adelphi University but their program isn't accelerated..so thats why I decided against it.

So I have decided to attend Concordia instead. May I ask..what happened? Why are you deciding against Concordia?

Hi,

I was actually looking into CNR as well! I agree Adelphi's program is 27mths (too long). I also considered PACE but hear more negative than positive. I'm just debating Concordia since its fairly new and during the initial process when i would call the department i was reffered to ************* who i found to be unhelpful and not so nice...i mean the lady never answered her phone!! she was never there, turns out she only works 2 or 3 days a wk..but i just got frustrated when trying to contact them...basically just felt as if i was getting a lot of push back (what you felt with CNR)..no school is perfect and i have some time to decide so we'll see! best of luck to you =)

Jessicanyc,

wow.. you and me are a lot alike. I was debating Concordia a lot too for the same reason..it is fairly new. But this ABSN program from what I understand is in its third year. So its not that new. But I can understand what you are thinking. I agree no program is perfect. I agree with you about the phone frustations..I experience it too. =/

I also looked into Pace too but didn't get much info on it. I looked into SUNY Downstate but after I did my prereqs, it was past the deadline to apply there. I also looked into Dominican College but it was past the deadline for this fall. Stonybrook has an accelerated program..but when I went there to speak with the nursing dept. She basically told me that it was impossible to get in.."a 4.0 gpa doesn't guarantee a spot in the program." Hartwick College has a 18 month program..but it is brand new..just starting this year (right now).

Hope everything works out for you!

Anybody going to the mini orientation on June 16th, Wednesday?

I'm going to that one, see u there! Anyone else?
