Competitiveness Grades etc

I know, it's on almost everyone's mind. We want to learn, we want to learn well, but we also need those GRADES. How competitive are nursing schools in your area? Do you obsess over your GPA? I've actually had a few anxiety attacks while studying, not good. I just finally decided that I'm not gonna stress like this anymore. I will do my best and if that isn't good enough than it isn't. Im a B student in the sciences (thus far) and an A student in everything else. I heard that the top two BSN programs in this area cut off at 3.7 something or other. ONe of them doesn't do interviews or essays or anything ALL they look at is GPA.

The ADN program isn't so crazy to get into, but it's a monster to complete. That's what the grapevine says anyway. So what are things like in your area. Are you happy with your grades, do you feel confident enough that you will be able to get into the degree program of your choice? Let's chat.

I'm 51 years old and have just returned for my BSN...to the University of Phoenix online...you betcherbutt I obsess over my grades I proudly suffer from middle-aged over-achiever syndrome. I think I'm making up for my lackluster performances in high school.

The ADN program that I attended in the mid 80's was extremely tough. It weeded out the people who really didn't belong in nursing. I graduated on the Deans List, with honors, it was a 30something goal of mine at that time. The class did extremely well though, ours was the first class in a very long time to have a 100% board passage rate.

Good luck you you!

very competitive you only hve a chance if you have around a 3.6 or higher. There is one school where it is lottery system where all you need is to complete you prereqs with a 3.0 ( maybe a 2.75 but i think 3.0) and they basically throw your names into a hat and you jus hope to get called. I'm not even bothering applying there, i never win anyting or have that sort of luck, so I am just making sure my GPA stays above a 3.7 and as close to 4.0 as i can get it, and then hope for the best with the 2 that i am applying at this year.

It is very competitive where I am at. The cutoff GPA is 2.5 but last semester they only accepted students with at least a 3.77. I am obsessed with getting good grades. I didn't have a very good GPA because I had a C in A&P I but retook it because of the 5 year rule and worked my butt off and now have a 4.0 in my pre-req. I know that if I didn't get A's in my classes than there would be less of a chance of me getting into nursing school. As of right now, I am happy with my grades. Now I am taking Chemistry though and not crazy about the teacher. I'll talk more about that though after my first test. lol :)

It is really competitive here. I am applying this year with a 3.5, because I transfered credits from another school in order to try to get in a year early. If I get all A's this semester and they take that into consideration, I should have a 3.7. I'm really nervous, but I didn't originally plan on applying this year anyway, so if I don't get in then I don't. It's really tough and every time I am around other pre-nursing students at my school, I can kind of feel that everyone is alternately sizing each other up and then trying to get tips or hints from each other. It is weird.

Gpa is EVERYTHING here, too.

My NS is 100% lotto. I have seen some pretty terrible students get into my program.

I am not what you called an "over achiever," more your average joe in terms of grades. The nursing program that I am interested in "preferred" cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Funny they required C or better grade on prerequisites and their nursing courses. Admission person explained to me that they look at everything not just GPA. However if they were to have a larger applicant pool, those with less than 3.0 GPA would be looked at last or not at all.

It is helpful to have a back up plan if this doesn't work out. What I am doing is I taking the rerequisites at the community college where they have nursing program. If I can't get into the accelerated bachelor's program for non-nurses, the community college nursing program would be my back up. The community college admits people into their nursing program on point system, grades, courses taken and so on.

I regret that I didn't try harder in my undergraduate courses. I was on the dean's list three time but my cumulative GPA isn't all that great. There were couple of courses that I bombed, one F and one D. If they could erase those two courses I bombed, it would bring my GPA much higher. Will see how all of this pans out! I am only trust in God for everything, He'll make a way! AMEN?!

I know what you mean about the over achiever syndrome. I graduated with my BSN from UOP and I was obsessed with my grades.

Apparently at Wayne State University there were around 1,200 applicants for the undergraduate nursing program (non-accelerated). Only 60 people were chosen. A 3.6 was the average GPA. The nursing advisors recommend that students should maintain a 3.7 average to be competitive for admission. It's very challenging to get into nursing school from what I hear. The slots are limited and the number of applicants keeps increasing every year. Good luck to everyone!

I am applying to a local community college. It has a good rep, & goes strictly by gpa. In this area, the ASN is the most difficult to be accepted to. The cutoff is 2.5 but to actually get in, you will need a 3.5, possibly higher as they are cutting program size this year. I too lament the fact that my first undergrad degree I played around & didn't do as well as I could have. I'm paying for it now.

The BSN isn't quite as competitive, but it has additional pre-reqs that some people don't want to take.

I will apply to both, & be thrilled if I am accepted into either!

I'm applying to the same program as lalajenn.

With her 4.0, she will get in before me. If 110 people have 4.0's, the number of support classes will be used, and then if needed, the GPA of the support classes will be looked at.

As for others, as well as myself, who have a 3.77, it will go by how many support classes each 3.77'er has completed, then if needed, the GPA will be looked at for the support classes.

I have a 3.77 on my pre-reqs, and have completed all 17 credits of my support classes, with a GPA of 3.82 on those.

The acceptance/denial letters are suppose to be mailed out by October 15th, so we'll soon find out if what we have is good enough! :)
