Commute Time

Published

I was wondering how long everyones commute to work is. If you have a long one, how do you manage it with 12 hr shifts? I think I may have a long commute (over an hour) to a new job soon until I am financially stable enough to move.

I live and work in the city; even though my commute is only about 10 miles, it can take up to an hour each way. It is 100% bumper-to-bumper traffic, so I usually listen to music or a talk radio show.

Early Saturday mornings are the best, though! 20 minutes, door to door.

Best wishes!

45-50 minutes each way. I take the train and subway because parking is next to impossible in NYC and our hospital does have a parking garage but it fills up very fast. Not to mention traffic in the NY metro area is ridiculous. If I drove to work it would be an hour and a half ride at least one way. That's the one thing about my old job that was good...I could walk there if I wanted to.

Some people say that a commute of an hour or more is no big deal. But those of us who have done it understand how rough it can be! ;) Even though it is hard, there are also some good things about it, like giving you an opportunity to clear your mind and relax. If it is only temporary, that makes it more manageable. Maybe you can make a friend in that area, and crash at their place once in a while, after a really long shift or during bad weather!

I live 60 minutes away from my hospital, and 30 minutes away from my per diem job at another hospital, one is north and one is south, and I live in the middle, I know sounds crazy right? I drive to the train station 10 minutes away and enjoy my train ride, when I get to my stop, I take uber to the hospital which is literally 5mins away. For my per diem I do the same, I prefer the train rides cuz its it's cheaper for me and I can sleep, read, relax and enjoy the ride.

It's funny, because im actually on the train right now coming from work as a type this.

20-30 minutes, depending on traffic and weather. 30 minutes is the max I will do.

I work different place on different days, minimum 30 min and longest 75 min. I don't think I could regularly do longer than the 75 min.

I can get there in less than 10 minutes. The length of time it takes to get from parking lot to building to floor is twice that long!

Same here! It takes longer to walk to my car and get out of the work garage than it does to actually get from the garage to my house. The longest commute I've ever had in all my years is 20 minutes on a bad day - having a short commute is important to my work/life balance and is something I consider when picking an employer/picking housing.

I work about 2 miles away from home. I could walk or bike if it weren't for the fact that I work NOC and start at 2300.

I served my time doing long commutes--at times up to an hour each way--for years. So location does play a big part in where I decide to work...unless of course, it was the opportunity of a lifetime. Then I'd suck up the long commutes again.

My commute is about 35 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes to an hour fifteen on the way home depending on traffic and weather. For a brief period of time my commute was an hour and a half and that was pretty awful. But I managed by listening to loud music or calling people (hands free of course!) to keep my mind awake. I would also eat a protein based snack at the end of my shift which I think helped keep me going. One day I would love to work close to home and have a commute less than 20 minutes.. but for now thats just in my dreams..
