I started out as nursing and switched after I couldn't get into the program at my school. I changed my major to Health Promotion for the community or basically community health. I had no problem getting a job and I just graduated in May '10! I feel that while I love nursing health promotion was a great fit for me. You can still work in a hospital etc and its a very up and coming field. I love it and had no problem getting a job.
Im hoping someone can give me a bit of advice because Im sort of in a pickle.I am currently a junior, well, about to be a senior, and was accepted into two schools for this Fall 2010. I was granted re-entry to the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (I was there last spring 09) into the College of Applied Health Sciences for Community Health. Health Education and Promotion really interests me, and I really miss the university's atmosphere. Im just worried about the job prospects afterwards. However, I've been "pre-nursing" since I started college and i was accepted to Lakeview College of Nursing in Danville (after being denied at both ISU and UIC). If I attended this school, I would be commuting to Danville from Champaign which is something Im not really looking forward to.
I was wondering if anyone who has been in my situation or attended either school could give me some insight? Nursing is something I know I want to do, but Im not quite sure if Im ready for it yet. I've been reading a lot about direct entry masters programs such as the ones at Depaul and Rush. If I decided to pursue a direct entry masters program, would a bachelor's in community health be a waste?
Any information would be appreciated! Thank you!!!!
I'm also going to be commuting to Lakeview from Champaign this upcoming fall so you can always carpool to ease the burden. You just have to decide what route you want to go first. I started out at UIC but didn't know what I wanted to do and didn't take school seriously. You just have to decide what makes you happy because job prospects may be uncertain for the nursing class of 2012 as well.
Sure! I went to Winona State University in Winona MN. I loved it and was able to complete my whole major in a year of classes and then a 1 semester internship.
I interned at a corporate wellness company and I currently work for them doing the health screens for the clients. I take blood and discuss the participants cholesterol results and glucose testing results. We then discuss how lifestyle and diet factors can lead up to these results and how they can be changed to reduce health risks.
