Columbia University ETP 2011

Published

Thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread for prospective applicants to Columbia's ETP program starting Summer 2011. I was going to apply last year but passed on it in favor of working for another year.

Applications are due November 15, 2010! Right around the corner ...

Anyone else preparing for this also? :clown:

Methodology is stated here: http://www.usnews.com/education/articles/2010/04/15/the-health-rankings-methodology

"All the health rankings are based solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline."

"Nursing specialty rankings are based solely on ratings by educators at peer schools. Nursing educators nominated up to 10 schools for excellence in each area."

I think that the nursing rankings (us news and world report specifically) are based SOLELY on what they consider academic experts, or peer-review. Other programs like law, business, etc are based on admission rate, ratios, funding and more quantifiable parameters.

Here are some links explaining:

http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/college-rankings-blog/2011/02/24/best-graduate-school-rankings-are-coming-soon

http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/college-rankings-blog/2010/10/21/grad-school-ranking-surveys-are-in-the-mail

"Also, we're doing new peer-assessment-only rankings for the graduate degree programs in the fields of healthcare management, nursing, nursing-anesthesia, nursing-midwifery, physician assistant, public health, rehabilitation counseling, and veterinary medicine."

Random and probably stupid question but... how do you know you've reached your stop on the subway? J told me I should take the airtrain from JFK to jamaica station and then the E to 42nd and then the A to 168th..... how do I know when to get off and transfer? are there signs or do they announce it?

There are definitely signs everywhere and they make an announcement as the stop is approaching. On some of the new trains there is a light up sign that shows exactly where the train is....you'll be fine! I would grab a subway map just to have as a visual if it would make you feel better. See you Friday!

Friday is so soon! I can't wait to meet everyone =)

Hello!

I've been following this thread for quite a while, and I just wanted to say congrats to all who got accepted into the ETP program! I got in for the pediatric np specialty :) Anyone else on that route? Also, I'm from Southern California, and I'm becoming quite nervous (but more excited) about making the big move to New York. I have read that it is wise to live on campus for the first semester before moving into an apartment, but the limited supply of campus housing makes difficult I'm assuming? Is there anyone else who is moving to NY from CA? If so, will you be living on campus or off campus?

Thank you! This helped a lot :-). I was so scared haha

I'm moving from California too! I've been so nervous, obsessively asking a friend of mine in New York random questions like, "What do people wear when it's cold??" :)

I'm really hoping that on-campus housing works out, because I'll be so overwhelmed if I have to find an apartment across the country in an unknown city! Does anyone know what the chances are?

Hi! I am also from CA (norcal). I want to live on-campus until I get the hang of things...plus I think this way it's easier to meet people and get the help you need. I heard that if you don't get into on-campus housing that the housing office at Columbia will help you find a nice affordable apartment around campus too :-).

I'm from San Diego (as are some others here). If I decide on Columbia it will be quite the move :)

You can also take the Airtrain to Howard Station and take the A from there....

Seems like all the new ETPers are from California...any East Coasters? I'm in for actue care and going to the visit on Friday...can't wait!
