Thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread for prospective applicants to Columbia's ETP program starting Summer 2011. I was going to apply last year but passed on it in favor of working for another year.
Applications are due November 15, 2010! Right around the corner ...
Anyone else preparing for this also?
It's about hour and fifteen min - hour and a half from Stamford. The metro north is a solid 45-50min, so I use this time to study, read, or sleep. There is another ETP student that I commute with and it's really not as bad as it sounds..Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hi! I'm thinking of commuting from Stamford as well. Are you able to do that commute in an hour and fifteen even early in the morning when you need to get to school or clinical at 7 or 8? Thanks :)
Hi guys,
Those who turned their housing forms in promptly and from far away generally got preference last year. I decided to live in an apartment on the upper west side because I have a pet and wanted a little break from being on campus all the time. A lot of my friends lived on campus for the summer and then moved into apartments in the fall around school/upper west side. This worked really well for them because it made the initial move less stressful and gave them time to get a feel for where they'd like to live vs. making a quick decision from really far away.
I'm from Northern California (bay area) and I picked an apartment on a trip out to NYC in April. It was stressful and I probably could have found a better place but it's only for a year :)

Hello, I'm from California too and I've NEVER been to NY before. Does anyone know a good place to stay during visit day that's close to Columbia? I'm afraid I'm going to get a reservation in a completely different neighborhood or something....
Yes I also would love to know a place to stay that is close by and inexpensive... I am still deciding if I am coming to accepted student day or not. Can anyone tell me how useful the day is. Would you say it is worth spending like $550 on a plane ticket?

I booked my flight from SF to NYC through Southwest in April (I can't make it to visiting day) and it was under $300. Check Southwest and JetBlue for good deals.
In general, good prices for California to NYC roundtrip would be around $300. Not sure what prices would be like with 1 week to buy.
Also, instead of JFK, consider Newark (EWR). It's probably easier to get to Columbia from Newark than JFK. Just take the NJTransit NorthEast Corridor to Penn station, and you can take the 1-line up to 168th.
This is a random aside: but for those of you comparing schools (and putting some emphasis on ranking), the US News and World Report is releasing updating rankings for nursing on March 15 for the 2012 issue. Current rankings are from 2007 issue.
Not sure how much emphasis should be put on these rankings though, they don't seem very robust and are more peer-review or "expert" review. (Not as thorough as law, business, medicine or undergraduate ranking procedures.)

I have been thinking about this a bunch as well -- good to know that the new rankings will be out on 3/15! Do you guys know what the overall ranking is based on? For Columbia there seems to be a big discrepancy between the overall ranking and some of the speciality rankings.

I'm not sure how dependable my source is but he said that rankings are based on how many apply and how many are rejected, class size and faculty-to-student ratio...
