Columbia University ETP 2011

Published

Thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread for prospective applicants to Columbia's ETP program starting Summer 2011. I was going to apply last year but passed on it in favor of working for another year.

Applications are due November 15, 2010! Right around the corner ...

Anyone else preparing for this also? :clown:

You can also take the Airtrain to Howard Station and take the A from there....

I heard this route takes longer?

hey! I'm from Westchester, NY (only like 25 minutes outside the city)..can't wait to meet everyone on Friday :)

I heard this route takes longer?

Yes, this is true. If you want to go to downtown Manhattan, Howard Beach station to the A is fastest. But if you're going uptown (like Columbia) take the Airtrain to Jamaica Station, where there are a ton of signs to lead you to the E train towards Manhattan. Once you're on the E, you can switch to the A (fastest, this is the express), 1 or C when you get to 42nd street in Manhattan.

If anybody is unsure how to get anywhere in the city, use this website:

hopstop.com

It tells you subway routes to get you around the city. Type in the address of where you're starting (in this case, Jamaica Station, and select QUEENS from the dropdown menu) to 617 West 168th Street (Manhattan, obviously) and it will tell you exactly what stops you pass, it will show you a map, and tell you exactly where to go and how long it will take. It always shows the fastest route and shows alternate routes as well.

Has anyone on the waitlist been taken off and given acceptance yet?

Anxiously waiting....

Hey naa232 -- they have given us until March 21 to give a deposit to hold our spot in the incoming class, so I'm assuming the waitlist won't be updated until that date, when they will have an idea of how many spots they have. I hope that helps!

3/21 seems like forever....but I have no choice right..lol..

Thanks for the reply ;)

Hi nna-

If it's any consolation, I was accepted for the psych track but am also waiting to hear back from Yale and OHSU. There's a decent chance that if I get accepted to Yale, I will decline Columbia's offer which will open up a spot in psych. I will keep you posted!

Tanya

Thanks for letting me know. I applied to the Psych Program and was wait listed.... Columbia is my number one choice so I'm PRAYING that it works out. It seems Yale is your number one so I hope you get in! I have a friend who went and loved it! I'm hoping to stay in NYC though.

Hey naa, I also got in and am turning it down, so that's one more spot to give you a chance. ;) Don't give up yet! I would have loved to go but in the end I just couldn't justify the money, and had several nurses tell me where you get your degree doesn't matter so much. So I will be heading somewhere significantly cheaper, but I wish you all the best and have a great time, don't let the stress kill you. :)

hi kelysee10! What part of California are you moving from? The distance is definitely overwhelming, but I'm sure we will manage. I've heard that out-of-state residents have preference for on-campus housing, but I'm not too sure how far that goes. My cousin is from New Jersey, and I've been asking her what people out there wear too! I'm pretty intimidated by the weather there...I was shivering in 42 degrees just the other day. Uh oh :)

Hi! I am also from CA (norcal). I want to live on-campus until I get the hang of things...plus I think this way it's easier to meet people and get the help you need. I heard that if you don't get into on-campus housing that the housing office at Columbia will help you find a nice affordable apartment around campus too :-).

Hi hlu5! I didn't know that the school assisted people with finding an apartment if the on-campus housing doesn't work out. That's definitely good to know, thanks for the tip :)

Thanks, I'm trying not to be too discouraged. I've actually heard the same thing that where you get your degree doesn't really matter, but I really want to stay in NY and there aren't many places out here that have a BSN/MSN program which is really important for me.

But thanks again and good luck at your new school! :p
