  1. Paco's got it. :) My rent is $625 a month which includes everything (all utilities). It's a 3 person house in a nice neighborhood, and it's only about 10-15 minutes from the school. I know there are people who found places for $550 a month, but they said the house is very small, and I don't think that includes utilities. Around that range is average though.
  2. Those of you who are talking about living on campus: I highly recommend NOT doing that!! I live off campus and a) it's A LOT cheaper (as in half the price cheaper) b) it is away from the school/hospital, which trust me you will see enough of. Living on campus means walking to clinicals in the summer, and if it's anything like the last summer, you will be dripping by the time you get there in the morning. And working a 12 hour clinical after that is not a lot of fun. Also living on campus means a lot of eating on campus. The food is not the worst, but it is VERY expensive. I also know people living on campus who have complained about bug infestations and trouble sleeping due to other students not sharing our crazy schedule. Trust me, you will be wanting sleep before clinicals, and having to deal with noisy neighbors is very frustrating. I actually contacted people through last years facebook group, we found a place in the area really close, and it was a great decision.
  3. Haha this is the comment you mentioned! I had to go back several days looking for it, missed it the first time around. =P Thanks for the complement but I beg to differ. One of us went to law school and it wasn't me! (We can continue this debate in class.)Hope everyone is distracting themselves this weekend and not stressing too much!
  4. I honestly don't remember the time frame very well. Paco might recall better than me. I applied to a bunch of programs so I don't remember specifically when I heard from Stony Brook. I just remember there being an awkward waiting period after a lot of people on here had posted about getting emails. I wouldn't assume anything yet! Like Paco said, they send these things out in waves, and lord only knows the "system" the administration here uses. So hang onto hope if you haven't heard, but don't assume it means you're in. It takes them a while to send all those emails/letters out. Good luck!! Crossing my fingers for everyone who hasn't heard!
  5. For those of you who have not heard yet, don't freak out! Last year rejections went out before acceptances. I remember seeing a bunch of people talking on here about getting a rejection, and I was going through the same panic because I hadn't heard yet. Hang in there and wait just a little longer!
  6. Just to add to this: Something you may not know about SBU's program is that if you fail a class in the 1 year program, or if you tell the program advisor that you're feeling overwhelmed by the program, you can "decelerate" to the 2 year program. That means you will be moved into the new junior 2 year class (but will still finish up some of the 1 year classes that you were already in). Sooo if you're not sure you can handle the 1 year program, or you feel like you'll need a bit more free time, you can always accept the offer for the 1 year program and give it a try. If it's overwhelming, it's not the end of the world! You can just be moved to the 2 year class instead. :) So really getting into the 1 year program is a great option.
  7. Hi Dollface! Coming into this program, I had just completed a BS in biology, so I suppose I am one of the more "science oriented" students in the program (but there is a lot of variety, like I said before). I originally had thought about going to med school, so I had actually already completed a lot of the prereqs for the program. Of course I changed my mind and went the nursing route instead, which I think was a great choice. :) (Wait till you all see how little time the doctors in the hospitals have! They are on call constantly!) I ended up taking Anatomy and Physiology I and II at a community college over the summer before applying. I applied to Stony Brook and a handful of other places, and was lucky enough to be accepted. :) If you have any specific questions let me know and I'll do my best to answer, although I'm sure Paco has done a great job covering everything. And Kay: We technically graduate in May, but I know that we still have something in June, so it does run a full year. Paco, do you know exactly how the schedule works? I think we take a community nursing class or something that doesn't finish until then. It's a little odd, but if you are accepted you should plan on being here a full year. The administration is a bit of a mess, so I'm still figuring out the scheduling myself (they tell us things at the absolute last minute).
  8. With regards to a question posted a couple pages back about hospital experience: I'm a classmate of Paco's, and I came into this program with absolutely no hospital experience. I think the only thing I had was about 10 hours of shadowing a physician assistant (another career I was looking into). So I wouldn't worry too much about experience. A lot of our classmates this year are coming from completely unrelated careers (teachers, business, even an actor). So don't worry too much about that! Paco - I was curious to see if you were still posting on here and ended up reliving all the stress from applying. Good to see you still helping everyone out! (And I'm assuming you can figure out who this is based on my username...ya know, of your favorite clinical buddies. )
  9. Hey naa, I also got in and am turning it down, so that's one more spot to give you a chance. Don't give up yet! I would have loved to go but in the end I just couldn't justify the money, and had several nurses tell me where you get your degree doesn't matter so much. So I will be heading somewhere significantly cheaper, but I wish you all the best and have a great time, don't let the stress kill you. :)

I got the bad news by mail today, but I'm already committed to Stony Brook's program so it's ok. :) Have fun everyone and good luck!
  11. cas don't give up hope! :) I only got my acceptance last week and they only give 10 days to accept or decline, so it's possible that after 10 days people will be declining.
  12. Hi all, I finally hit the "accept" button on the offer for admission (and closed my eyes while doing it). Do we also have to pay the deposit within the 10 day limit after getting the offer?

Hi everyone, I know I haven't posted on here before, but I have also been waiting for a decision and haven't heard anything. I just called UVM (today) and asked whether decisions have been sent out yet. The woman I spoke to said "That process is underway right now and you should be getting something in the mail very shortly" so it sounds to me like decisions have NOT gone out yet. This would explain why we haven't heard anything about acceptances. Still crossing my fingers.
  14. jagy that is really scary!!
  15. Hi everyone, been following this thread for a while but only just signed up. I was accepted to Columbia but I'm still in my deciding phase since the cost is crazy and scary. I see I'm not the only one alarmed by this though! Does anyone know the expected cost of living in NY (per year)? And any suggestions on where to look for housing? I've heard that they have hardly any oncampus housing, so I'm not counting on that. Still waiting on 2 more schools so not sure yet if the big move to NYC is going to happen for me, but I'm trying to be prepared since due dates are coming up fast! Is there anyone else who's kind of scared of moving to such a busy city?
