Columbia University ETP 2011

Published

Thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread for prospective applicants to Columbia's ETP program starting Summer 2011. I was going to apply last year but passed on it in favor of working for another year.

Applications are due November 15, 2010! Right around the corner ...

Anyone else preparing for this also? :clown:

Can't make it to admitted students day on March 4th. Instead I'll be visiting this Friday, the 25th. Was wondering if there are any current students who are available to meet up and discuss their experience in the program on Friday afternoon. Thanks!

How long are you staying? We get off at noon that day and there's an ETP dance party that night if you want to join us.

Not free for the party, since I'm having dinner with my sister, who lives in Brooklyn, but I'll be on campus until around 5pm. Any chance you can meet up to chat?

Sure. Like I mentioned, we get out around noon that day (prob earlier coz it's an exam day for my group). As long as it's no later than 12:30, I'm good. If I can't make it, I can ask around for someone to chat with you about the program.

p_blankeney,

i am glad to hear from some else in my position. i feel very conflicted. i am attending both visiting days. are you attending either or both visiting days? it is my hope that i will get some information or a gut feeling about which school i belong at. i have not and do not live in either location. however, i am from ma and all three of my college roommates live in ny so i have spent a lot of time there versus the no time i have spent in atlanta. but living somewhere is a very different experience. are you leaning towards either school? any information or opinions you have about either would be very helpful to me if you would not mind sharing.

nursegradhopeful,

i am planning to attend both visiting days. i feel very much the same as you do. new york has a slightly stronger pull because i've lived there, and most of my closer friends and family are there. i do have extended family in atlanta and visited emory once, but my visit was years ago and unrelated to nursing school. the campus was beautiful - very green, which i'm sure will be a major difference. i'm hoping for the same epiphany you're hoping for =0)

i know little about the costs at emory, so that might play a factor in my decision. i'm hoping to learn a lot more during the visit.

Does anyone know when we should be hearing about our financial aid package? I'm sure we will find out during visiting day, but I'm curious nonetheless.

I can definitely make it at 12:30. Would you mind emailing me at [email protected] and we can firm up our plans?

Hi everyone,

This may have alreay been answered in a prior posting but do you guys know if we will find out about our financial packages BEFORE the March 4th open house?

I am starting to freak out a little .. ok alot about the cost issue :(

I am a current ETP student at Columbia and I live in Stamford, CT. The commute from here is definitely managleble. I take the metro north to 125th, bus to st nicholas and take the "A" train to 168th.

Hope that helps.

How long is your commute? How many times a week do you go to school?

good question... also, what's the latest that ETP students get off from class/clinicals... i'm most likely going to be commuting as well

What does the schedule look like for the first year?? Are you in class/clinicals M-F? There isn't any information on the website about this stuff..and any word from financial aid??

The ETP schedule generally followed the format below in 2010/2011. Although, we had two 1 credit courses that were only 5 weeks long thrown into the mix (one in the Fall and one in the Spring ahead of our Tuesday afternoon class)

Summer:

M: Class 8-12pm then class 1-4pm

T: Class 9-12pm then Class 1-3pm & 4-8pm

W: Clinical or Skills & Physical Assessment Labs

(clinical is 7:30-3:30 W or T in the summer, The 2 labs are 2 hours each and the schedule depends on what group you are placed in)

Th: Clinical or Labs

F: Class 8-12pm

Fall:

M: Class 9-4pm

T: Class 1-4pm and then 4-5pm

W: Clinical 7:30-3:30pm

Th: Clinical 7:30-3:30pm

F: Class 8-12pm

Spring:

M: Class 9-4pm

T: Off, sometimes have a Town Hall from 3-4pm

W: Clinical 7:30-3:30pm

Th: Clinical 7:30-3:30pm

F: Class 8:30-12pm

***After Spring Break integration occurs which is an ~8 week 1x1 clinical placement of over 250+ hours. You generally will "work" 3 x 12 hour shifts a week or 5 x 8 hours shifts, nights or days. I.e. you work the schedule of your nurse preceptor and only have 1 class a week in addition to your clinical (this is why you don't have 288 clinical hours, you sometimes have to leave clinical to go to class)***

You graduate with a BSN in May (around the 15,16, 17th) and then start MSN classes early June. The first MSN summer is really light (only 2-3 classes).

It may sound like a lot, especially the summer, but it is doable. It's all about time management and having the right expectations. I went into the Summer knowing my social life would have to be put on hold. After Summer life gets so much easier and you actually start to feel like you have time to do stuff other than school. Hope this helps!
