Columbia University-ETP

Published

Hey everyone. I was just wondering who applied to Columbia University's ETP program.

I got an email today telling me to keep logging into the website where I applied to check on the status of my application. Has anyone else got this email? And does anyone know approximately when they begin to post decisions?

I'm nervous as this was my #2 school.

Hi you guys,

So I was born and raised here in NY (Queens) and I've spent enough time around Columbia medical center since my ex-boyfriend and other friends went to med school there and stayed in the dorms (nice!). I also used to hang out in Inwood occasionally and although I'm OK with Inwood, I don't know that other ppl would necessariy consider it quiet and residential. I do think there are more families in Inwood, but it's definitely your city... definitely not quiet, residential suburbia. It's pretty much all apartment buildings and all.

I grew up here but I have spent time abroad and did go to college in the rural midwest, so when I come back to NYC I realize that when you describe things to ppl as quiet and residential, it might not necessarily be what they're thinking. You might want to do googlemaps and just look at street view of Inwood and Washington Heights to get a better idea of the neighborhoods. Still, I think the best bet would be to take the trains and see the neighborhoods for yourself.

I haven't yet figured out if I am actually going to Columbia so I haven't figured out housing yet, but I do know ppl who live near Columbia's Morningside campus who say that's not too bad and also others who have lived in Inwood who are happy with it. Still, someone already mentioned gunshots and things like that... I definitely would say be prepared and forewarned about things like that, too.

Oh yeah, one other thing.. if you look at Inwood on googlemaps.com, make sure to look at Inwood in Manhattan, around W 207th Street and Broadway (that's where the A train stop is), but NOT Inwood close to Long Island. There is another neighborhood called Inwood, NY which is completely far from Columbia Presbyterian.

Let me know if you have other questions and I'll def try to answer as best I can. I don't live in Washington Heights or Inwood, so although I've spent time there, I actually don't really know a lot about looking for an apartment there since I've never done it, but I am going to see if I can just ask around.

Quick financial question for those of you out there, I'm lucky enough that my parents said they had some money saved away in case I ever went to grad school. They are requesting dates and amounts due for tuition etc. I have very little idea of how much you have to pay and when, i only know the grand total (gulp!).

So I'm trying to figure out what is the min. you need to pay for the first semester and then how much installment plan wise one needs to pay. The deadline for accepting the financial aid package is coming up soon for me (the 18th). So I need to say yes or no pretty soon, that also gives me little time to investigate whether to get a personal private loan or just have columbia organize the private loan for me, since they don't report the rates it is hard to figure it all out. Any help would be much appreciated.

Is there anyone else who hasn't received their financial aid package yet - or is it just me? :(

I haven't gotten mine yet either. I haven't even gotten my official letter in the mail. I hope I'm still accepted haha.

Me neither. I'm very curious to find out how much aid I will get.

I didn't get mine either. I emailed Oscar last night to ask if it was on the way, but haven't heard back yet. Good luck everyone! It sounds like the package is pretty standard, in getting the $33k scholarship, the $12,500 in federal loans, and the estimate on what you would need for private, but that is just what i'm gathering hearing from others.

I emailed Oscar this morning and got my financial aid package information a couple of hours later. The numbers are pretty standard and similar to what everyone else is reportly receiving.

I got mine too, but i'm not sure it made me feel any better!

I totally agree with you freyalisa! Compared to the other schools I got into it seems like the scholarship covers the living cost for New York City.

Ijust applied for the private loan - i wanted to see if i would be approved and what my interest rate would be. I wonder if I should try to find a cosigner. Ugg - just completing the applicaiton totally stressed me out.

which bank did you go through?
