Columbia School of Nursing MDE 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Hi AN fellows!

I know it is super early to start such a thread but I was hopping to connect with potential applicants/classmates for Columbia SON MDE 2018 program!

If you are applying to Columbia SON for summer 2018, let's share our experiences, ideas, thoughts and such!

Looking forward to hearing from some of you!

I think this is not quite right. When I added it up, it came out to closer to $177k total, but I could be wrong. The two semesters are for a paid residency, meaning you wont be paying tuition during that time, from what I can tell.

Does anyone else have any further insight? It is a little frustrating that the financial aid email only included MDE costs. Nowhere on the website can I find an exact cost, only number of units (40 total for DNP) and the per unit cost. That's how I came to my estimate.

It is right though. Costs were discussed in both Facebook groups. Also, we're going to be charged a flat rate instead of per-unit. There was also the first financial aid webinar today.

26,874 + 27,680 + 27,680 + 27,680 = 109,914 for the MDE portion alone

They told us that the DNP portion would be about 160,000 total, but I also read in the groups that it's 54,000 per DNP year.

Is that for tuition or for all costs? I did not attend the webinar, so it's good to have that info.. thanks!

It's for tuition only. Crazy expensive!

The seamless transition to DNP scholarship is being raised to 40 up from 26.5k, however. You will get 20k year 1 and 20k year 2 of the DNP.

And we still pay tuition during the residency.?

Also important note -- midwifery residency is the only one not paid. But at this point, the Fin Aid office is saying that they will *not* be giving an additional $20k scholarship for those midwifery students for that 3rd year of DNP (4th year overall), even though they are the only ones not paid in the 4th year!

It's still part of your curriculum at 5 units each for two semesters.

Is anyone else in the midwifery concentration?

Really? Are you sure?

This seems like a really big notice/downfall. Can anyone else in midwifery confirm this?

Your best bet is to reach out to Admissions or the Midwifery faculty. I'm sure there are solutions, but remember each specialty is different.

True! I'm FNP, so this doesn't affect me personally, but I was just trying to get some additional input for my fellow peers. Ahaha.

Email from Admission team:

"The Office of Financial Aid does not award scholarships in the third year (residency) to any DNP students. This is not specific to the Midwifery program. Scholarship money is not distributed due to the number of credits DNP students are enrolled in during the third year.

Furthermore, a paid residency during the third year is not guaranteed for any specialty. It is only paid if students find a paid position. It is our understanding that since the Midwifery program is based on competencies and not hours, it can be more difficult to find a paid position. Ultimately, this process is overseen by the program director."

So I guess it's never going to be set in stone but looking very unlikely that the 3rd year would be paid. I guess we can ask more on Friday.
