Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi AN fellows!

I know it is super early to start such a thread but I was hopping to connect with potential applicants/classmates for Columbia SON MDE 2018 program!

If you are applying to Columbia SON for summer 2018, let's share our experiences, ideas, thoughts and such!

Looking forward to hearing from some of you!

Hi

I am so glad somebody finally created a thread for 2018 candidates. I am applying this year in hopes of getting in for next year. I still have 3 more pre reqs to take and the GRE which I am a little nervous about. Other wise just waiting to apply once they give access to the application.

Hey! I just started the MDE program last week in the 2017 cohort. I applied to several schools and the info on all nurses last summer and fall was so helpful in me choosing the right one to accept! Feel free to post questions to me! Good luck!

Hey! I am gald you were able to get in! Would you mind answering a few questions?

1. How fierce is the competition to get in?

2. How do you like your courses/classmates/professors/placement so far?

3. Do you feel you are receiving a quality education?

4. How do you pay for the tuition? Any scholarships or grants available?

5. Anything else you think it important o share.

Thank you in advance!

Hi all!

Super excited about the start of this thread! Serves as a reminder that we are all one step closer =)

I recently sat through an open house for CU. Made me all the more excited! Currently working on my last prereq for the program (Microbio). Then, will start my preparation for the GRE. Can't wait to get both out of the way..

Good luck to all!

Congrats on making it into the program! Best of luck in your first semester! I do have some questions:

1. Is it possible to manage a part time job? If so, approximately how many free hours does a student have?

2. Does CU offer many scholarships and/or grants? If not, how did you manage financing the costs?

3. Have you met any applicants with a low undergraduate GPA (i.e., lower than 3.0) in your class? If so, were there any specific highlights in their application that may have pulled them through the screening process?

Thank you for the help in advance!

Hey! Do you happen to remember the 2 essay questions from last year?

Hey! Do you happen to remember the 2 essay questions from last year?

Part 1 of the essay asked, " Why do you think it is important for registered nurses to be trained at the master's level?".

Part 2 was, "Columbia Nursing is dedicated to providing an exceptional educational experience that supports inclusive care for diverse populations. Describe your interest in and commitment to working with diverse populations.".

Thanks! Do you know if these are the questions for this year's application? Trying to get a sense of what questions are asked.

See answers below...initially forgot to quote the questions I responded to.

1. I would not get a part time job if I were you. At least not in the first 15 months. After the MDE portion, if you continue in the DNP it is possible to work per diem or TA for tuition credit. Do NOT do it when you first start though.

2. I am doing student loans. There are scholarships, they will tell you about that in a virtual financial aid session you can sign up for.

3. We don't really share our GPAs lol. It doesn't seem relevant cause we are usually trying to figure out assignments we have due haha. I do think Columbia takes into account a lot of factors, for sure the essay and prior work/volunteer experience in health care or in particular the field you are interested in.

Good luck!

1. I am not too sure about the competition. I have a good friend who did not get in to Columbia but got into Yale. But, I have also met people in my cohort here who did not get into Yale. I am just using Yale, but in reality in can be any school. I feel like that Columbia cohort is all really tied together by social justice and promoting access to care for underserved individuals. So that seems to be something Columbia looks for.

2. So, far I only can speak about the first semester (which isn't much in the grand scheme of things). Pharm and PA are great. Most profs are knowledgable, organized, and approachable. The summer semester is a lot of large lecture classes (250 people). But it does get small in all the semesters after and you are broken up more. There are tons of group work which makes it easy to meet lots of different people. Out of all the classes we have (10 in the summer lol) most people are only unhappy with one, which I feel like is par for the course in any program. They are slightly disorganized in the summer, but I think it improves, again just par for the course in my opinion.

3. So far, I don't think anything about our classes is extraordinary just because they are at such an introductory level. But I think at Columbia, you get the advantage of being in a large city with lots of Columbia connections.

4. Student Loans. lol . They will have virtual financial aid sessions that will explain all that if you go there. I listened to one before I committed to Columbia, as all the other schools I got into were much cheaper.

5. If you end up attending, just be flexible and open the first semester. It is a huge adjustment, some disorganization, and tons of work, but worth it!

Hope that helps!
