Columbia ETP 2015

Published

Has anyone started a thread yet? The application is due in 174 days and as you can see I'm already obsessing.

Anyone else?!

Yup! I know MGH is also kinda pricy so I need to see what kind of aid they can give. I don't like their NCLEX pass rates, and I'm not too keen on their online classes and overall disorganization. But there are pros just because it's local. I'm still bummed that UMass doesn't have a psych direct entry program.

Most of the midwifery programs require a BSN and then a couple years of L&D work and then the two year MSN portion, so it would be a significantly greater time investment for me. I could be a CNM in the same amount of time it would take me to get to just starting the MSN programs and they're still 60-80k if you include the BSN portion. That's how I talked myself into this craziness. Ha ha.

I had a small breakdown thinking about taking on so much debt. Then I realized, there are plenty of nursing/med professionals who've done it before. The earning potential with an advanced practice nursing degree is great. You may be paying loans off for a long time if you decide to attend an Ivy League school in one of the world's most expensive cities. But, there are plenty of scholarships and tuition remission programs available--also, you will be making good money in a job that you'll (hopefully) love at the end of the program. That's priceless.

@Bumblepea, please don't take it to heart! Columbia received over 100 applications for midwifery this year and only had 7 spots available. I know it doesn't help your situation, but the administration had to turn away really strong applicants this year because of capacity limitations. :(

FYI here is the general cost breakdown for the ETP year. This was from last year's Visiting Day.

@Bettybones. Thanks, that's really encouraging information! I'm still strongly considering Columbia with the expectation that I could find my way into the midwifery track after the BSN portion is over. If not, I guess I could leave the program and apply at NYU? Decisions, decisions.

Does anyone know the stats on the number of applications received vs. the number of applicants accepted?

Does anyone know the stats on the number of applications received vs. the number of applicants accepted?

It's approximately 800 applicants and 180-200 accepted.

Thanks, Divalicious!

Wow, thank you for finding out that terrifying info! I'm having trouble deciding between here or PA school, is anyone else by chance having the same dilemma?

I'm having the same dilemma, which PA school are you considering?

The reason I gave up the PA track is because they will always need a doctors signature. NPs will have more growing opportunities and will be able to practice privately.

My top choice is Midwestern right now. You?
