Hey Y'all!
I'm getting ready to apply to the Columbia's ETP for 2010. I was just wondering who else was applying and what you were doing to make your application stronger! Also where else are you applying and what do your stats look like (GPA, GRE, experience, etc) ? I'm getting nervous as I start the whole application process and just thought I'd turn to the forums for some support and guidance!
I'm looking forward to sharing the journey with y'all! Hope to hear from you soon! :)

To any former students on here, can you tell us which first year ETP textbooks you preferred??
We are given a few options, and I am always picky about my books when given a choice!!
For N5102 The Science of Nursing Practice / N5104 Practicum there are a number of "SUGGESTED" texts: (if you like another book better than one of these, I would love a good recommendation!)
"Taylor's Clinical Nursing Skills"
"Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment: Practice Exercises for Medical-Surgical Nursing (2005)
(LaCharity, Bartz, Kumagai)
"Handbook for Brunner and Suddarth Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing" 11th edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins) OR ANY OTHER Medical Surgical Handbook.
"Flip and See ECG" (Cohn)
"Nursing 2010 Drug Reference Guide" (Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins) OR ANY OTHER drug reference guide
"Pocket Guide to Diagnostic Tests" (Nicoll, McPhee, Pignone, McPhee) or any other lab reference guide
Then for:N6100 Advanced Physiology (Aboelela) there's:
Please choose one of the following SUGGESTED:
1. "Medical Physiology: Principles for Clinical Medicine" by Rodney A.
Rhoades published by Lippincott
2. "Vander's Human Physiology: Mechanisms of Body Function." By
Eric Widmaier, et al. 10th or 11th edition. published by McGraw Hill.
3. "Human Physiology: From cells to systems" by Lauralee Sherwood
7th edition published by Brooks Cole
These last two in particular didn't get amazing reviews on Amazon, but rather talked about yet another book, and input a past student could give, would greatly help!! Thanks a ton for any feedback~~~~~~~~~~
yay got FAid package. But I have ONE QUESTION:
There's the student and parent contribution, there's the SON scholarship, and now there's the student private loan. but there's still 40K left... am i suppose to go find my own loans now? or are they suppose to give me MORE loans? where am i going to find that much money?
Mine had schlarship, federal loans and private loans. I was actually surprised because they gave me the full amount for the estimate costs, even though I had an expected student contribution amount they did not deduct that out. I happen to have the esc amount so will probably take out less in private loans but I am surprised they left you with a $40K gap. Maybe call them to ask about that? Seems like offering more in private loans would not pose any issues for them. At least we have all the information now, what a relief.
Also, after we accept can we go ahead and start applying for private loans in that amount?
Thanks sportsgirlly.
The federal loans were listed. The only way I got anything was by submitting my FAFSA, I imagine their guidelines are what determine what is offered. My private loans were for the remaining amount estimated for tuition and cost of living minus the federal loans and scholarship. It basically matched up exactly how other people broke it down from earlier posts. My private loan was broken into summer, fall and spring equally (~$22K each).
I should add that I am an independent student, so perhaps for those of you seeing something different it may vary your parents are taking the loans. There are various situations for all of us, so that may expain why you do not see the same federal loans and private loans the way I am seeing them.
Hope that helps.
I'm an independent student with an Expected Family Contribution of $182. This was my financial aid breakdown (totals for the year):
Perkins $2000*
Stafford $5,500 subsidized,** $7,000 unsubsidized***
Nursing Student Loan $3500*
Private Loan: ~$60,000
CUSON scholarsip: $22,667
That would cover my estimated need, which they put at about $101,000, including living expenses. If you're also an independent student with a negligible EFC and you filed your FAFSA, yours is going to look the same.
It is a huge joke that they are "awarding" me private loans. Who will have to pay the loan origination fees and interest that accrues before and after graduation, as well as the principle itself? Not them. Actually, since I have been WORKING MY BUTT OFF since I filed my FAFSA, I am not going to take out a private loan at all. Federal Asset Protection, hah.
*5% interest rate, no interest until after leaving school, no fee.
**4.5% interest rate, no interest until after leaving school, 0.5% fee
***6.8% interest rate, interest accrues upon disbursement, 0.5% fee

Hey DizzyMissLizzy9, I did not recieve an e-mail either! Can't believe that they are only giving us a month to sort out our financial situation! May 1st is still not a guarantee, by May 1st they will come up w/another excuse.
I wonder if they are actually going to help if we encounter any problems...probably not.
