Hi Cultuslakenurse! Did you finish the RN-MSN program at American Sentinel? I am tryng to decide if I want to attend there. How was it? They say they are computer friendly, did you find that also? I am so nervous about all of it, I have been a nurse x 29 years and don't even know if I can pass a course again. I hear it is all writing papers. Is there a capstone? So many questions, sorry and thank you!

Specializes in ER, Community Nursing, Case Management.

Yes, I did finish my MSN in Case Management from American Sentinel. I enjoyed the programme and was able to keep up with all the papers. You have to prioritize your week as 8 weeks go by quickly. Some courses have a bigger paper at the end and some a project. The programme changed alot when I was nearing the end-yes there is a capstone-it was interesting to do.

The only issue I had was that when I took the MSN - American Sentinel was not accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and therefore was not transferrable as an MSN degree where I live. I have the education but cannot use MSN after my name. This was disappointing to me. (not to be confused with the Council for Higher Learning Education-that was my mistake). Good luck to you. J.

Oh no after all that work you could not use the MSN after your name? All these accreditations are making my head spin, I am going to have to sit down and figure them all out before I make a decision. Thank you very much for the reply.

On the other hand my friend who lives in Colorado got a very good job with the school system because of her degree. It is accepted in many places. Good luck.

Does American Sentinel University require statistics as a prereq or during the BSN coursework? Their admissions office told me no, but it is listed on their website, someone on allnurses said no as well but I really want to know from someone who actually took the RN-BSN program recently. Thank you in advance!

If they don't it reflects poorly on the program

Dear Ironfan! What grad school with NP programs would accept ASU which is non regionally accredited but CCNE accredited? I spoke with some, and none of them accept non regionally accredited schools.

It had nothing to do with regional accred. The NP school only wanted the school you went to to hold one of the 2 national nursing accred (ex CCNE) Several of my MSN courses tranfered fine towards my ARNP.

No statistics courses are required for a BSN at this school and they are currently seeking regional accreditation as they applied for it around two years ago, unfortunatly it takes years but I think they will get it. Most all of my professors where EdD's or PhD's.

Hi LadieRN,

I am Jim K and I graduated from American Sentinel University's Master of Science in Nursing education program on November 30, 2010, Summa Cum Laude.

American Sentinel University (ASU) offers the RN to BSN, RN to MSN, and the BSN to MSN with 5 specialty concentrations (management and organizational leadership, education, case management, nursing informatics, and infection prevention and control).

I truly enjoyed my studies and because ASU's nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the Distance Education and Training Council a U.S. Department of education approved accreditind agency. The CCNE accreditation provided a type of additional quality assurance for me and because of this assurance I had no trouble when I applied to a post-master's clinical nurse specialist and a Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) program from other CCNE accredited schools.

The courses are designed to be completed in a eight (8) week format. The MSN student is required to submit a weekly assignment and to submit a response to a discussion board posting. The MSN program is challenging, yet rewarding. I received a great education that has equipped me with the needed skills and/or tools to go into the for-profit or non-profit nursing classroom and help the perspective nursing students meet his or her goals of becoming a future LPN/LVN or RN. I started my program in March 2009 and completed the program on November 30, 2010, while working full-time. And to prove that I am a real person, I have provided a link to the schools announcement section, as I was selected as student of the month for October 2010. I have recently received several offers to teach asynchronous and synchronous nursing courses and have accepted one of the offers.

The admissions and financial aid process was easy and well laid out. No obstacles or high pressure tactics from staff. I have had ten (10) fantastic, yet fair instructors/professor and one bad professor that no longer teaches at the school. ASU values the input of its students and goes out of their way to find ways to improve student satisfaction, while increasing the quality of the education that each student receives.

Please feel free to contact me by phone or private massage/email to address additional concerns on the ASU master's level nursing degree program.

Regards,

Jim K, RN, MBA, MSHS, MSN, LNC
