College of Marin Fall 2021

Published

Hello!  I just applied to COM’s nursing program for fall 2021. I believe I have 86 points per my calculations. Anyone else applying?  I heard that quite a lot of applicants from 2020 who got in last year decided to defer for a year due to COVID, so there will be less available spots this year!!  I’m hoping 86 pts is enough to get in, and I’m also hoping to apply for the BSN program through either option they offer. Would love to hear from anyone else hoping to get in to COM Nursing this year!

Hey everyone and congrats to those who have been accepted. I am curious about the program reviews at COM. What have you heard regarding the program and how it compares to other ADN programs. Thanks!

I am also curious what you've learned since being accepted. I am applying in the next round and would love to know what is coming. I am very interested in understanding how they assign clinical's are they 12's or shorter? How many days per week? I know we can't pick the schedule as its assigned but I am curious.

Did you guys take the TEAS proctored ?

  • Just wanted to update that I was just accepted into the program TODAY in late July, only five weeks out from the start of school. I had 76 points. I had definitely given up hope!

Congratulations! Did you receive this email as well? I only have 69 points, so I really don’t have any hopes.

Congratulations!! I had given up my seat for Fall 2021 earlier this week but never got a confirmation from them regarding it and thought they may be out for the Summer. Hopefully this is an indication of that LOL

@krayselley Well THANK YOU! I'm sure it was your seat I got. Can't tell you how much I appreciate it!

@Jessica3521 - yes, I definitely got that email too and was resigned to retaking Chemistry this fall and re-applying. I had a 4.0 save for an A- in Chem. This is one competitive program!

Hi! Can anyone who is currently enrolled in the program give me an idea of what scheduling looks like? ? I’m a prospective hopeful student for this fall!

I’m mostly curious on the general routine, how much time you find you have for family etc… thanks in advance!

I hope you get in!  The semesters are basically split in two quarters: 2 eight week portions. Your first 8 weeks will be practicing basic skills in the campus skills lab. Then you will have your first clinical rotations during the 2nd 8 weeks of your first semester. Most rotations are Tues/wed from 6:30 to 12:30, but it depends on your location. Some can be one day a week for 12 hours: 5:45 or 6am start. E eye 8 weeks your clinical rotation assignments change. You usually don’t find out your assignments for rotations and days/hours until a week or so before the new quarter. The classes are manageable, but you have to be organized!  I have 2 school aged (elementary) kids and it can be tricky managing my time and theirs. But some quarters are heavier than others. You also get a big long break during Winter and Summer.

Awesome! Thanks so much for your insight. I have a couple more Q’s:

- Are you enjoying the schooling processes, or is it as “hellish” as lots of the forums describe it?

- do you get any downtime during the week to relax with your fam? (I understand that it requires time management but just generally wondering)

- are the professors etc friendly and helpful, or is it more of “you’re on your own” with your classmates?

- lastly are you doing the bridge program to BSN? Any insight on this process?

thanks again so so much for your time! It’s so hard to find this info straight from a current studen!

The first 8 weeks will be “hellish”, because you are going to be adapting to a new schedule, life, and a LOT of material being thrown at you fast and furious!  However the professors are all AWESOME and supportive especially if you are communicative early on and don't wait until last minute. I already have a bachelors and a master’s degree and this experience is more intense and different than my other degree programs for sure. You will get a lot of down time during the Winter and Summer breaks. Also I am not working - I quit my job right before starting COM. I would not have been able to work (even part time) and juggle school and family!  There are a lot of BSN bridging options, even outside of the two that COM suggests.  That won’t be a problem. You can apply for the SSU bridge program, and you won’t start taking your first class until Summer break. None of the ssu BSN classes overlap the COM school schedule. Or you can opt for online programs too. So many out there to choose from!  Or some just start working right out if COM and worry about advancing their degrees a little later on.
