Hi everyone!
This is my first time posting, but I have been on Allnurses for a couple of years now! I really appreciate this community, as you all helped me to get through my prereqs and pass the teas 6.
I have applied to College of Marin's Fall 2017 ADN program, and I'm reaching out to see who else is applying there as well.
In addition to College of Marin, I had to cast a wide net for schools--I also applied to about 9 other schools in and around the area.
I would love to set up a thread so we can keep in contact with each other....I think we start to hear back in April/May.
Good luck to everyone who is applying this round, and I hope you get into your top school!
I am doing the BSN program through University of Phoenix. They are accredited and recognized by the Board of Registered Nursing. I've heard from multiple nurses that it doesn't matter where your BSN comes from, as long as you have it and the program was accredited.
The way it works is you take your first class with Phoenix the month before you start at COM. The summer between your 1st and 2nd year at COM, you take two more classes with Phoenix. During winter break in your 2nd year, you take another Phoenix class. Finally, once you graduate with COM, you take classes with Phoenix with the intention of graduating from their program by the December after you're finished at COM. It's nice because it's a whole semester shorter than Sonoma State's bridge program and you're guaranteed a spot. Spots in the Sonoma State bridge are limited. The say they reserve 11 spots for COM students, however this year only 6 people out of my class got in.
In terms of paying for Phoenix, since COM is your primary program, you cannot apply for federal aid for your classes through University of Phoenix until you've graduated from COM. So you either have to be ready to pay out of pocket, which is almost half the cost of the program, or apply for a student loan. Unfortunately the only student loan organization that Phoenix accepts is Sallie Mae, so you're somewhat limited with your payment options. However, if I'm remembering correctly Phoenix is a bit less expensive than Sonoma State. Either way I would recommend doing one of the bridge programs. The way things are in the nursing field now, many hospitals prefer to hire nurses with BSN's. Also, doing the bridge program through either school is roughly half the cost of what you would pay if you waited until you graduated from COM to get your BSN. I want to say Phoenix's was around $12,000 and Sonoma was around $13,000. I think both would be $30,000++ if you put it off.
Hope this helps!
Hi~
Thanks for explaining university of Phoenix's program.
I wonder why Sonoma state only took (6) students, if they've been telling us (11) can get spots...hmmmm. I wonder if it changes every year? Or they base their acceptance on grades?
I also didn't know that we couldn't use financial aid for university of Phoenix until we are graduated from com. This is the first I'm hearing of this. I wonder if Sonoma state is set up the same way?
I hope we get specific questions answered tomorrow at the info session!
Sonoma State is a bit different. You don't apply until your 2nd semester at COM and the first two classes with them are the summer between first and second year. It is my understanding that you also cannot apply for financial with Sonoma State while you're still in COM's program. When you first apply and are accepted to Sonoma State's nursing bridge program, you are enrolled in their nursing program but not the university (this makes no sense, I know). Therefore you cannot apply for federal aid, but I believe you can apply for a student loan. Sonoma's program lasts for a full year after you're finished at COM, so it is a bit longer than Phoenix's.
I'm not sure why only 6 made it in. It is based on grades. You need at least a 3.0 and there seems to be no exceptions. I know of a few people who were just under a 3.0 (2.9ish) and still didn't get in. It was very strange and I believe even the COM nursing faculty were perplexed by it. The year before I believe they accepted 15-16 COM students. Luckily, Phoenix offered to let students in my class who didn't start last summer begin their bridge program this summer, so some of those people who were rejected from Sonoma had another option. However, I don't know if they will continue to offer that in the future.
Also, wanting to know are we getting notified meaning++ getting into the Program itself++not the score on the TEAS, if we did well on the TEAS and have a high lottery number by regular email or school email or mail or both or combo, I was told Mon or Tues we would start to hear, I think I got in right if my number is 14? I need to try and move and I was going to hustle and take Speech 110 this Summer anybody else trying to do that too to get it out of the way?? I will def accept although was a little sad that their Nclex score just fell (anybody else notice that ) okay thanks, good luck everybody, I am new to this site and dont really understand how things work here, lol,
