Hello all,
I am applying this summer for Spring 2011 admissions for COC. I know they choose their students based on 2 criteria. i wanted to know for those students who have been accepted, what were your stats. Do you have a prior degree? What was your GPA for your undergrad, and for your pre-reqs? Have you worked in a hospital? Their application has a section where you can mark off if you were a first generation college student, if you had emotional circumstances or economic challenges. How will that affect the applicant?
I know this other question should go under a different topic, but what is their nursing program like? i tried searching the classes for each semester to simulate what their class/clinical schedule would be like but I got confused with the "short term" classes and the different lectures for each class. Could anyone tell me what a typical week is for a nursing student at COC? where clinicals are practiced? When I was getting my training at COC for CNA we did Henry Mayo hospice.
Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions but i really want to get a picture of the future, lol. I'm getting old and wish to get my new career going. I've got a degree in Biology from MSMC that has really gotten me no where, and since I've always been interested in medicine and have had some experience as a CNA I think nursing is a great choice. I've spoken to my friends who graduated with me but they got their degree in Nursing, and they just love what they do. they have given me real facts on the pros and cons and this seems like the right move. Thank you for your imput. :-)
five10fever,
Awesome! As long as you got all your stuff, like make sure your transcripts are already in the transcripts office by that time, and that you have your second copy of transcripts so that you can turn in your application that same day. If you can, try to get an application from the nursing program before that day so that you can have it filled out, if not call Nursing Office and see if they can fax it to you since I don't recall ever seeing it on their website for download.
Have all your stuff ready so that the counselor can just check off your pre-reqs and fill out your educational plan so that you can turn it along with your application (without that ed-plan the nursing program won't take your app). Nov. 30th will def be before finals and before the next round of applicants can turn theirs in. If things go well you shouldn't be so far off on the wait list and if things continue the way they are you should easily make it into Spring 2012. I know it seems like a long time from now, but time goes by so fast and you at least will know you'll have your spot secured no matter what. :-) Good luck!
Ohh and as to the TEAS, my brain is fried right now, so whatever version we took at COC, County is taking the next one up, as far as I was told.
Hi skybmonkey,
Thanks again for your reply! Yes, we do have lots in common! :) I actually did have Geisbauer for Fall 2009. It was my first class as a returning student (after YEARS of being away), so I was nervous at first. But thankfully, it was a pretty easy class. Anyway, your story caught my interest not only because you have a toddler as I do, but you had mentioned you attended a post-bach program. Were you pre-med? I only ask because my hubby was pre-med and was about to get into a post-bach program, but then realized that he never even wanted to do pre-med, and that he was only doing it to satisfy his parents request (and constant push) of him becoming a doctor! lol We met as undergrads...sadly, my undergraduate GPA is not so great however my pre-req GPA is a 4.0 so far. Where did you go for your undergraduate studies? I'm wondering if we went to the same school???
As for the Teas Test, did you purchase a study manual off the ATI website? If so, was it the 4.0 version? On the ATI website, the manuals are separated as 3.0/4.0 & then version V. I asked them about the differences in the versions, and they said it's not much different and they also informed me that as of next year, they will be doing away with the 3.0/4.0 versions. I wasn't sure how that would affect the version of the Teas that COC & other colleges will be administering, but I suppose I have plenty of time since I don't plan on applying until later next year as well. I'm just really, really rusty!!! I know it's basic, but I don't really do well in these types of exams. I have a really high math background, I took math all the way to AP Calculus in HS & then an additional 1 year of Calculus as an undergrad, but when I randomly browsed through a review book at the bookstore, I had realized there were a lot of (basic) things that I had forgotten. Additionally, although math has always been my strongest subject, English has always been my absolute WORST...so we'll see how reviewing goes...
Anyway, I would love to personal message you. Please let me know how to go about doing that on here, if possible. Thanks in advance & have a great day.
Hi skybmonkey. Just want to let you know that I received your reply - thank you so much! For some reason, it was in my spam folder and I didn't see it until recently. I replied back to you, but I just want to make sure you received it as well (just in case you don't see it/or it went into your spam folder too). :) Anyway, thanks again for your informative email. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond, as I know from experience, just how busy moms with toddlers can be. :)
mrmandap,
I was an alternate and was notified today that I was accepted in the program. When talking to the nursing office they said everyone should recieve an email from their teacher within the next few days. They did tell me I would be doing clinicals at Olive View.
Hope that helps. Jennifer

skybmonkey,
I finally got an appointment at AVC its Tuesday Nov 30th so hopefully that will get me just in time before the next round of applicants. I will let you know what number I am after that.
Regarding the TEAS version. I thought LA County is useing version 5. I have not taken it myself but a good friend did and that is what version she was studying for.
