Hello all,
I am applying this summer for Spring 2011 admissions for COC. I know they choose their students based on 2 criteria. i wanted to know for those students who have been accepted, what were your stats. Do you have a prior degree? What was your GPA for your undergrad, and for your pre-reqs? Have you worked in a hospital? Their application has a section where you can mark off if you were a first generation college student, if you had emotional circumstances or economic challenges. How will that affect the applicant?
I know this other question should go under a different topic, but what is their nursing program like? i tried searching the classes for each semester to simulate what their class/clinical schedule would be like but I got confused with the "short term" classes and the different lectures for each class. Could anyone tell me what a typical week is for a nursing student at COC? where clinicals are practiced? When I was getting my training at COC for CNA we did Henry Mayo hospice.
Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions but i really want to get a picture of the future, lol. I'm getting old and wish to get my new career going. I've got a degree in Biology from MSMC that has really gotten me no where, and since I've always been interested in medicine and have had some experience as a CNA I think nursing is a great choice. I've spoken to my friends who graduated with me but they got their degree in Nursing, and they just love what they do. they have given me real facts on the pros and cons and this seems like the right move. Thank you for your imput. :-)
Urbanstudent,
Good luck on your quest for a nursing school. Currently COC uses the TEAS version 4. For the other schools in the area, I know LA county uses version 5. When doing some research on the different nursing schools websites some list what TEAS will be needed to apply. I wouldn't be suprised if all schools in the area will be at version 5 by the time you apply.
five10fevr,
Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. Where does it tell you which version of the teas test is being administered for COC as well as the rest of the schools in LA County & Ventura County? I've looked on various websites (schools), but it doesn't tell you which version they are using. Maybe I am missing something, so please let me know how you can go about finding out which version of the TEAS test is being used (for different schools). Perhaps I will post this question on a new thread, just in case. But if you could give me any insight, I would be so grateful. Thanks again in advance.
Urbanstudent, call the the schools individually and ask them. The reason we know COC offers version 4 is because we just took the exam like 2 weeks ago :-) And bc some students are applying to more than 1 school, they are aware of the other schools to which they are applying. Good luck! :-)
Did you check your junk mail? They were telling us that sometimes the emails end up in the junk mail. My suggestion though would be to call them, rather than to wait since the dead line for the orientation has gone by. They stated that anyone who did not attend orientationa and was accepted would be terminated from the program. So you should call them and explain to them your situation, tell them you found out about the meeting just now after running into the forum. Good luck
Hi Skybmonkey,
I'm sorry for taking quite some time to reply back. I've been really busy this semester.
I'll answer your questions as much as I recall them. You sure ask me a lot of questions.
1. Regarding alternatives. You may be notified as early as the week prior to the start.
2. Yes, some hospitals have options for you to work in newborn nursery. Caution to you though, the work is really repetitively. I got tired after a year of working there.
3. No I did not graduate from COC. But I can tell you that I know the program REALLY well.
4. Clinical rotation isn't the same day with lecture. You have 2 days of lecture and 2 days of clinical. There're morning and evening clinical. You do not get to choose where you will go and which which you will be. The school will assign for you.
5. There're clinical rotations on the weekend. However, there are very few as less and less instructors are willing to work on the weekend.
6. I never taken a TEA's test. When I went to school, the TEA test wasn't a requirement.
7. There're 2 separate lecture sections since there are 60 students. 30 students will be in one lecture with one professor while the rest of 30 will be in another group.
I think I've covered a lot of questions :)

Hello!!!
1st of all, congrats to everyone who got into COC!!! :) I came across this site after trying to google some information about nursing school, and am ecstatic that I came across this website! :) This is my very 1st post on here, so hopefully this comes through ok. :)
Anyway, I am a returning student (after being away for quite some time) and am trying to gather as much info as I can before applying (won't be applying until next year or so). COC is one of the schools that I would like to apply to and would like to know if you could tell me the version of the Teas Test that is administered for this particular school? I know there are different versions and was wondering if the version that you took was 5.0? Also, does the version of differ per school? How would you go about finding out (let's say for other schools)? Thanks in advance for your advice.
