Hello all,
I am applying this summer for Spring 2011 admissions for COC. I know they choose their students based on 2 criteria. i wanted to know for those students who have been accepted, what were your stats. Do you have a prior degree? What was your GPA for your undergrad, and for your pre-reqs? Have you worked in a hospital? Their application has a section where you can mark off if you were a first generation college student, if you had emotional circumstances or economic challenges. How will that affect the applicant?
I know this other question should go under a different topic, but what is their nursing program like? i tried searching the classes for each semester to simulate what their class/clinical schedule would be like but I got confused with the "short term" classes and the different lectures for each class. Could anyone tell me what a typical week is for a nursing student at COC? where clinicals are practiced? When I was getting my training at COC for CNA we did Henry Mayo hospice.
Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions but i really want to get a picture of the future, lol. I'm getting old and wish to get my new career going. I've got a degree in Biology from MSMC that has really gotten me no where, and since I've always been interested in medicine and have had some experience as a CNA I think nursing is a great choice. I've spoken to my friends who graduated with me but they got their degree in Nursing, and they just love what they do. they have given me real facts on the pros and cons and this seems like the right move. Thank you for your imput. :-)

Hi, I just got in to COC and will be starting this fall. My stats looked like this: Prereqs- 4.0
All other classes- 4.0
No work experience only volunteered at a hopital for 200+ hours
No degree in anything else
I will keep you posted on what to expect as first semester progresses, Good luck and I hope you get in!!
Thank you for keeping me updated. Your stats are pretty good. I think I have the same stats for the pre-reqs but not for all my undergrad classes so I'm hoping that wont be a problem. I can't Private Message you with more questions bc the rules on this forum wont allow me to do so until I do 15 posts, lol, is there any other way to contact you?

Hi,
I got accepted and will be starting CoC RN program in Fall, 2010. I can tell you that my grade is only okay not all that great. I got 3.7 on core-prerequisites (anatomy, physiology, and chem), I have a B.S in Health Care Administration and my undergrad GPA is only 2.91, and I scored 83% on my TEAS. I am not a person with the perfect grades; however, I did some volunteers work in a hospital and cancer center. I just want to give you a little background and my stats and wish you the best of luck in pursuing our career as a nurse.
P.S. Congrats to everyone that made it into CoC Fall, 2010!
annen912,
Thank you for your reply, and thank you for the good luck wishes that is very sweet of you. I turned in my application today, my pre-req stats are 4.0 but my undergrad is unfortunately not that great, a little under a 3.0. AAHHHH if I could redo my undergrad. My B.S. is in Bio with an emphasis in medicine, I worked a little CNA, and actually took the course that COC offers for CNA. I also worked at a Genetics lab as a tech (I totally forgot to mention that as work experience ahhh!!!), and volunteered at LAC-USC for a while. Nothing special. They have scheduled the TEAS test for September 24th, so we'll see how that goes. By the way if any of you have your TEAS book still and you no longer want it let me know, or if you want to lend it out.
Good luck during your first semester, and let me know how it goes for you. :-)
So they sent me an email to take the test September 24th...any tips on what to study? I'm planning on buying the ATI study guide and use a website with free study questions. Anything else you think I should or shouldn't do?

Do not get discouraged by the message you found on the womensconference.org. There're always 2 sides of the story.
Besides, who can expect positive things from the message that someone who got expelled from the program wrote?
Look at the rest of others' comments. They said they learned all the skills and knowledge at COC which helped them to become a real good nurse...how come they did not think of that is the result of the strict and high standard of practice of COC?
Yes you have a point. I previously had spoken to a good friend of mine who is a nurse in peds and she told me the same thing. Basically she said that every program has its good and its bad and that one will encounter "drama" everywhere. The whole "nurse eating their young" phrase she said is everywhere and one can only do their best. Thank you. by the way I notice you are a PICU nurse, how do you like it? I would love to be a NICU nurse, i love little babies. Another option would be Labor and delivery or post partum, lol, but I heard these are competative places to get a job in. Thank you for your post. :-)
