Hello all,
I am applying this summer for Spring 2011 admissions for COC. I know they choose their students based on 2 criteria. i wanted to know for those students who have been accepted, what were your stats. Do you have a prior degree? What was your GPA for your undergrad, and for your pre-reqs? Have you worked in a hospital? Their application has a section where you can mark off if you were a first generation college student, if you had emotional circumstances or economic challenges. How will that affect the applicant?
I know this other question should go under a different topic, but what is their nursing program like? i tried searching the classes for each semester to simulate what their class/clinical schedule would be like but I got confused with the "short term" classes and the different lectures for each class. Could anyone tell me what a typical week is for a nursing student at COC? where clinicals are practiced? When I was getting my training at COC for CNA we did Henry Mayo hospice.
Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions but i really want to get a picture of the future, lol. I'm getting old and wish to get my new career going. I've got a degree in Biology from MSMC that has really gotten me no where, and since I've always been interested in medicine and have had some experience as a CNA I think nursing is a great choice. I've spoken to my friends who graduated with me but they got their degree in Nursing, and they just love what they do. they have given me real facts on the pros and cons and this seems like the right move. Thank you for your imput. :-)
Hey all,
Got the email on classes and text books and such... really exciting!
According to the schedule, my first class will be the Skills Lab on Feb 4. It says it's at "Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital/COC Skills Lab." Does that mean that there is a lab room at Henry Mayo, or at COC?
Just want to make sure I'm at the right place on the first day!
Mrmandap,
I am very excited too, place my book order last night. I could not believe how many books we need for the first semester.
I will see you Feb 4th, Where is your clinical site? Mine is Olive View.
Are you familiar with Henry Mayo at all? COC skills lab is by Rehab. If you are facing the hospital it is the building to the right.

So I just took the TEAS Version V at College of the Canyons, drove 2 hours from Orange County and missed the test by 10 mins, stupid early morning 7:45am tests!!! I can thank Google maps for giving me the wrong campus!!!! :banghead: so I finally get to the RIGHT campus and missed the test. THANK GOD there was room in the second Teas test that afternoon...I just had to wait 4 hours....so I scored an 80% which I hope is competitive enough to get in. Did anyone else take the Teas? They said it would take 24-48 hours for the results to show up...but they were up like 2 hours after the test. Emails go out in 2 weeks!!! can't wait...fingers crossed.
Hey Sunglitz-
Did they give you any more information on when they will let applicants know by? I applied last round, was wait listed and never got called up. I applied again on the off chance I get in for the fall... but I was also accepted to 2 other programs as well and my time window to accept my seat is short.
Thanks for your help! Best of luck :-)
Of course! Anatomy/physiology was B/C, micro an A, English an A and all non nursing classes have been satisfied from my B.S. Overall GPA is 3.1 and my teas was a 94%. I also have work experience as a phlebotomist, so that may have helped too.
One thing about COC is they require students to have an LA county issued fire safety card. They offer only one class at the school each semester and it fills up super quickly. If you can, sign up for it ASAP. I waited too long last year and ended up scrambling to find a hospital that offered it outside of employees only.
Good luck to everyone applying :-)
