College of the Canyons Stats

Published

Hello all,

I am applying this summer for Spring 2011 admissions for COC. I know they choose their students based on 2 criteria. i wanted to know for those students who have been accepted, what were your stats. Do you have a prior degree? What was your GPA for your undergrad, and for your pre-reqs? Have you worked in a hospital? Their application has a section where you can mark off if you were a first generation college student, if you had emotional circumstances or economic challenges. How will that affect the applicant?

I know this other question should go under a different topic, but what is their nursing program like? i tried searching the classes for each semester to simulate what their class/clinical schedule would be like but I got confused with the "short term" classes and the different lectures for each class. Could anyone tell me what a typical week is for a nursing student at COC? where clinicals are practiced? When I was getting my training at COC for CNA we did Henry Mayo hospice.

Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions but i really want to get a picture of the future, lol. I'm getting old and wish to get my new career going. I've got a degree in Biology from MSMC that has really gotten me no where, and since I've always been interested in medicine and have had some experience as a CNA I think nursing is a great choice. I've spoken to my friends who graduated with me but they got their degree in Nursing, and they just love what they do. they have given me real facts on the pros and cons and this seems like the right move. Thank you for your imput. :-)

Thanks Ellie Bean13. Those are good scores, especially your TEAS. Was that version IV? We just took V. Where have you been accepted?

Yes that was for version IV. I've been accepted into Cuesta College in SLO and Evergreen Valley College in San Jose. Hopefully I will get into COC, its definitely my #1 choice.

Nice Day and Sunglitz-

I got an email today- I am an alternate again :-( I hope you both got better news than I did!

Hi EllieBean13,

Got my e-mail today too and I'm an alternate. I have A's in all my science classes, an 86 on the TEAS V and direct patient volunteer experience. I really don't understand their admittance criteria since there is another COC thread and someone got in with a 78 on the TEAS and B in Anatomy, with an A in Physio and an A in Micro. Why wasn't I selected before that person? Makes no sense.

Not a ... Nice Day!

I'm not sure how it works either, my stats aren't very good. I guess we will get more info at the orientation this month. I know for the fall '10 class the whole alternate list was used up. Spring '11 had a few left that were not used. Here's to hoping...

That's acutally good news. Do you know how many people make it on the alternate list/ I heard approximately 350 applicants, so I guess we should be happy we are alternates.

I got my email!!! I'm in the program!!! WOOHOO!! so excited! :monkeydance::monkeydance:

Congratulations Sunglitz!

Nice Day- I can't remember the number they told us at orientation last semester, but I believe it was somewhere around the 40's. I could be totally wrong though... I have been an alternate at a bunch of schools so I may be mixed up.

Thanks EllieBean! I'm sure there are people who might end up not showing up for the orientation or drop later once their letters come through from other schools...I'm still waiting to hear on a bunch so we'll see.

Wooohoo! Got my schedule and clinical site! Wow....1st semester is going to be a lot of work for sure! I'm gonna be at Holy Cross, anyone else going to be at Holy Cross? So excited.

Hi, think that person you're talking about is me, but its not at COC, but LAVC! And its the lottery system. This is my 3rd semester applying to nursing school- so thrilled! Best of luck to you! I bet you get the call!!!

I got into COC and LA Countys program. Any idea what are the pluses and minuses. COC is nicer and closer but the days are all erratic. Your at the program many more hours a week. LA sets you up with a job pretty much too... What you guys think?
