Hi everyone!
This might be a little too early for a thread like this, but I submitted my online application for the spring at COC and I'm so anxious yet excited!
Anyone else here already go ahead and do that? What's everyone's stats who's applying?
I have been studying for the TEAS since May, and it feels so real now that my application is in!
lets get this thread going :)
Hello all,Joined in an on the excitement kind of late, but I read pretty much all the comments; congrats to all who got accepted for Spring 2016!! I did as well, and I'm so happy!! I cant believe I'm finally going to start the program. I just sent my RSVP for November 6. Anyone here know someone who is currently in the program, or who can answer the following questions:
1) Are people able to manage working part time and doing this program?
2) Are the any scholarships that are offered?
3) Who is the toughest professor in the program, and what can I do to excel in that class?
4) Is there a facebook for our future cohort, etc?
Too many things to ask....I'm so excited and so nervous. I've heard nursing school is so hard. I know I'm getting ahead of myself.
Hello!
First off, CONGRATS! You will love this program. It is great! To answer some questions:
1) Yes, it is absolutely possible to work while doing this program. I have worked the entire time. I currently work part time (sometimes more) and there are plenty of people that do this, have families, are in simultaneous BSN programs. And there are some that feel they cannot manage these things. Everyone is different and each of us has our own preferences, etc.
2) Yes, there are scholarships offered. Visit the COC scholarships page for more information.
3) toughtest professor? Hmmm...I'm only halfway through 3rd semester so I can't speak for all of the professors until after graduation. However, I think they are all tough. They want us to be the best we can be and have high expectations. Every single one has been fair and FANTASTIC!
4) facebook cohort, not my thing and its possible people in your cohort will choose to do one :)
Nursing school is hard. BUT, if you really put your mind to it, make a study plan and stick to it, you will be fine. Like I said, many of us work, have families, etc outside of school and we are doing just fine. GOOD LUCK!
Do you know what the requirements are to apply to the COC CSUN bridge program? and what is considered a strong candidate?
As long as you have all the prereqs required to get into the "normal" CSUN BSN program you should be good. Oh and you must be eligible to transfer to CSUN as you must be an actual student at CSUN and will have to apply and get accepted to CSUN. These two brochures should help. If not ask me and I'll try to clarify.

I don't recall that we had to strong candidates, unless you are referring to the COC website, which is outdated. In the original cohort there was 10 students. I think I'm in the 3rd cohort and we have 30 students. Everyone that wanted to do it got in.
Thanks you so much for the info. What exactly did you do to get in? Just apply to CSUN? Is it possible to take more classes each semester to possibly finish early since you said you don't have to follow it to a T?
Basically you just tell COC you are interested and make sure you can apply and get into CSUN. It is not possible to take the the core upper division RN classes. Look at the links I posted above to know which classes those are. Since CSUN has to schedule those you can't take them early as far as I know. Unless they changed it the plan is you go to CSUN for 3 summers. 2 summers in between COC nursing school. 1 fall semester your first year at COC (so during your 2nd COC semester), and finally 1 Spring semester and 1 final Summer semester post graduation at COC.
Hope that makes sense.
PS For those that don't have a previous degree or have attended another university before take note that you can only transfer 70 units to CSUN which means that if you only take the required 9 Upper GE's and the CSUN core BSN program you will be short 5 units to reach the required 120 units needed to graduate from CSUN. I only mentioned this because they failed to tell our cohort this and some were upset. Which is understandable since it's 2 extra classes that people didn't plan on taking.
PPS I would encourage you all to take advantage of the money you are paying. At CSUN you pay a standard price for 3-6 units and a higher standard price 6.1-12 units. So even if you are only required to take 3 units one semester you should take 6 so you can get your moneys worth. This has happened twice for us. In fall 2014 we were only required to take 3 but since it would be the same to take 6 I took extra classes. Same thing this summer only 9 were required but I took 12 units. Otherwise you'll end paying thousands more for the same amount of classes. I encouraged everyone in my cohort to do this, but some didn't, and now they regret it because they will have to pay more like I stated above.
PPPS
You may also want to consider taking your financial aid out at CSUN instead of COC but that is a whole another ball game. I may talk to COC Nursing and see if I can make a PP of this info for students in the cohort. All of this information I have had to hunt down myself through countless hours of research and trials and errors. Would be nice if all the new cohort students had all this info ahead of time.
Also I forgot to mention that when you send your transcripts to CSUN make sure they are certified. Depending on which route you took will be the one you need to choose. The choices are below. Don't forget to do this. I forgot to do this and CSUN was telling me that I needed to take some many extra classes, which was not correct.

Well, It looks like there will only be 10 spots for those of us planning to apply to the COC CSUN bridge program. This makes it much more harder to get in. I know, sad news!
Says who? Where did you get this info? As I said earlier the info on the COC website is outdated. Or is this the policy now? Our cohort is like 30 people.
Yeah I knew they were doing other cohorts as I've been going to CSUN for over a year now. That's a shame they must be condensing all of the other schools into one class. Well, I hope you all try and take advantage of this opportunity.[Thanks, yes we are going to try to get in. I know it seems very unlikely but who knows. We can only try and hope for the best :)
